Rescue teaches you to set boundaries, but the dogs teach you when you need to break them.

One of the hardest parts of being both a shelter volunteer and a rescue is balancing what you see right in front of you with the bigger picture of what you know you can realistically take on. You try to stick to the plan… and then you meet a dog who makes you throw it all aside.

When Finn’s urgent plea went out, no one came forward for her. Thankfully, Cassidy with Inked K9 came to meet her—and she saw what I had the week before: a sweet, playful, deeply loving and spirited little dog who just needed a chance. We both agreed she was absolutely worth saving… and so we did.

New beginning. New life. New name.

Welcome, Mira. 🤍

Mira is a young dog who likely had little to no experience with other dogs before being thrown into the chaos of the shelter. A label could have cost her everything.

With love, structure, and training guiding her forward, her past no longer gets to define her. Mira is going to shine.

We’re giving her time and positive, thoughtful socialization before making any assumptions about how she truly feels about other dogs. She might just make some friends along the way.

One thing is certain—she’s already stolen our hearts🤍

Our senior boy who struggled to even get up in the shelter is thriving in foster. What a difference love makes 🥹💕

Timber was weighed down by discomfort and uncertainty. Now, he’s rediscovering joy in his foster home — and it shows in every wag and every step.

He is happy, comfortable, and truly ready to meet his forever family.

It doesn’t take long to see who a dog really is once they’re given a chance 💚

Two weeks ago, the volunteers at Friends of St. Johns County Pet Center reached out to us with a plan to quickly get Sam (now Ricky) out of the shelter and on his way towards the life he deserves.

They knew he was more than the stressed dog kennel life had started to create. He just needed the opportunity to show us who he really is.

And wow… has he delivered!

In that time we’ve already gotten to know the incredibly loving, happy boy that is Ricky 🥹

Ricky | 7 years old | Tall, dark & handsome

• LOVES LOVES LOVES affection — butt scratches are his absolute favorite
• Highly food & ball motivated
• Kennel trained + quiet keeper
• Walks beautifully on leash
• Dog neutral — coexists easily with other dogs
• The BEST happy zoomies you’ve ever seen

Training Update 📣

In the next two weeks, Ricky will complete his training program with Cassidy at Inked K9

He will be:
✔ off-leash trained for adventure
✔ Solid on commands: sit, down, place & heel

Then he’ll be ready for his next step…

🏡 A foster home — or even better, a forever home of his own.

Your tiny shadow has arrived. Meet Archie! 🤎

We don’t often need to jump in for the little guys… but this time, the timing was just right!

When I walked into the shelter lobby to volunteer, Archie greeted me in the office. He was simply too small for his kennel and had slipped between the bars to find his own little adventure.

Within minutes, this little fox had found his way into my lap and Out came the squeaky voice—the one that usually means a dog is about to come home with me.

When I found out he was heartworm positive. That sealed the deal.

Thanks to an immediate foster stepping up, Archie was able to leave the shelter with me that very same day.

Since then, he’s settled beautifully into foster care. Now all he needs is a forever family of his own to follow!

🐾 Archie 2-year-old Chihuahua.
⚖️ 10 pounds
🏡 House trained
🐶 loves to be with other small dogs
❤️ Affectionate, loyal, and happiest close to his people

Archie is heartworm positive, but Coastal Canine Rescue covers all costs of his treatment. His adopter will simply need to bring him to three scheduled veterinary appointments in St. Johns County.

A few heartworm facts:

🦟 Heartworms are not contagious—dogs cannot catch them from another dog.
❤️ They are spread only through the bite of an infected mosquito.
💊 With treatment dogs live long and healthy lives.
🛡️ Monthly heartworm prevention protects dogs from future infection.
