🚨 GASTROPEXY: WHAT IS IT & WHY DOES YOUR DOG NEED ONE? 🐶🩺

You may have heard your veterinarian mention a gastropexy, especially if you have a large or deep-chested breed. But what exactly is it?

A gastropexy is a surgical procedure that permanently attaches the stomach to the abdominal wall. Its main purpose is to significantly reduce the risk of a life-threatening condition called gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), also known as bloat.

🌀 Why is GDV so dangerous?
With GDV, the stomach fills with gas and can twist. This can cut off blood flow to the stomach and other organs, quickly becoming a life-threatening emergency.

🩹 So what does a gastropexy do?
It helps prevent the stomach from twisting. It does NOT prevent the stomach from filling with gas or becoming distended, but it greatly reduces the chance that the stomach will rotate.

🐕 Who might benefit?
Gastropexy is often considered for dogs at increased risk of GDV, including breeds such as:
• Great Danes
• German Shepherds
• Doberman Pinschers
• Standard Poodles
• Weimaraners
• Boxers
• Other large or deep-chested breeds

💡 A gastropexy is commonly performed during another abdominal surgery, such as a spay, but it can also be performed as a preventative procedure on its own.

⚠️ Even dogs who have had a gastropexy can still experience bloat, so knowing the warning signs is important!

Signs can include restlessness, a distended abdomen, repeated unproductive retching, drooling, weakness, or collapse.

🚨 If you suspect your dog may have GDV, seek emergency veterinary care immediately. Every minute matters.

Talk with your veterinarian about whether a preventative gastropexy is appropriate for your dog. ❤️🐾

🐾 Scratching isn’t the only sign your pet may be uncomfortable.

Many itchy pets actually show more subtle symptoms like paw licking, head shaking, scooting, rubbing against furniture, or excessive grooming. Some pets may even develop redness, hot spots, or hair loss over time.

While occasional scratching can be normal, persistent irritation may point to allergies, skin infections, parasites, or other underlying conditions.

If your pet seems uncomfortable more often than not, it may be time to visit us to help identify the cause and find relief. 💙

Not every ear problem starts with obvious pain.

If your pet is frequently shaking their head, scratching at their ears, or avoiding touch around their head, it may be more than a minor irritation.

Watch for signs like:

👂 Redness
👂 Unpleasant odor
👂 Discharge
👂 Excessive scratching
👂 Sensitivity when touched

Ear issues can worsen over time and become increasingly uncomfortable for your pet. Early evaluation can help identify the cause and get them feeling better sooner.
