♻️ Ways to Give Wednesday: Save Your Bags!

Sometimes giving back starts with something you were about to throw away.

This week, we’re giving a shoutout to Spokane Riverkeeper and Spokane Zero Waste for finding a pretty clever second life for empty pet food bags.

They’re collecting 25 lb. or larger pet food bags to upcycle into reusable recycling collection totes for Spokane Riverkeeper cleanups throughout our community.

And Spokane Humane Society is happy to help!

Instead of tossing your empty bags, bring them to SHS and we’ll help put them back to work. It’s an easy way to reduce waste, support cleaner waterways and turn something as simple as an empty pet food bag into something useful again.

Big thanks to Spokane Riverkeeper and Spokane Zero Waste for doing good things for our community and inviting SHS to be part of it.

WAYS TO GIVE WEDNESDAY
Give a bag. Give it another life. Do a little good. 🐾♻️

🖤 Millie has been waiting for her turn.

This 3-year-old girl came to us in mid-June, and she’s still hoping someone will notice just how much fun she is.

Millie is energetic, playful, sweet and just the right amount of goofy. She loves being chased by her dog friends, taking sniff-heavy walks, telling you all about her day and settling in right beside you when the fun is done.

🐾 3 years old
🐕 Does great with dogs her size or larger
🚫 No cats or small dogs
🏃 Would love an active home and even a canine buddy

She’s been here for a bit. We think it’s time Millie got to be someone’s girl.

🥹🧡 One month ago, the Spokane fires changed our community in a matter of hours.

Today, we remain incredibly grateful to the firefighters, first responders, emergency personnel, and everyone who worked on the front lines to protect our community. And to the partners, businesses, donors, volunteers, and neighbors who stepped up to help, thank you. Your support allowed Spokane Humane Society to provide pet food and supplies, microchipping, veterinary resources, cremation assistance, and other help when it was needed most.

One month later, we’re still here. And we’re carrying forward an important reminder from everything we experienced together: having a plan before an emergency matters.

Microchip your pets and keep your contact information current. Have veterinary records, medications, recent photos, emergency contacts, and care instructions somewhere accessible. Talk with someone you trust about who could care for your pets if you couldn’t.

And put your wishes in writing. As we turn the calendar from National Make-A-Will Month, FreeWill remains available as a free planning resource through our partnership with Merit Financial Advisors. Our Spokane Fires Pet Support resources also remain available for those who may still need help.

The support our community gave during this crisis helped us respond in the moment, and it is helping us learn, strengthen our preparedness, and be ready should our community need us again.

Planning ahead can’t prevent an emergency, but it can help make what comes next a little easier.

🧡 Happy Ginger Cat Appreciation Day! 🧡

We get it. The orange coats. The sweet faces. The big personalities. The occasional questionable life choices. Ginger cats deserve every bit of love today.

There’s just one tiny problem… We don’t have a single ginger cat available for adoption right now.

So, on behalf of the grey, white, and black cats, tuxedos, tabbies, torties, calicos and assorted works of feline art currently at Spokane Humane Society:

We’ll be filling in. 😌

We love our ginger friends. We celebrate our ginger friends. And apparently, you all do too, because we’re fresh out.

So while the gingers enjoy their special day…

May we interest you in another color? 🐾

Sincerely,
The Definitely-Not-Ginger Cats of Spokane Humane Society

Senior dogs like Aspen belong with the people who love them.

We’re excited to share that we’ve been selected as a recipient of a Staying Home Grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization. This funding will help us provide support services that keep senior dogs safe, healthy, and with their families–preventing unnecessary shelter surrender and helping more dogs remain where they belong: at home.

The Staying Home Grant is part of Grey Muzzle’s national effort to better understand the challenges senior dog guardians face and identify proven solutions that help families stay together.

A huge thank you to Grey Muzzle and their supporters for making this possible and for believing in a time where every senior dog finds safety, love, and a soft landing.

Update: ADOPTED!

It’s Monday. Sparkie has already had 14 ideas, made 6 new friends, and is wondering why everyone else is moving so slowly.

Sparkie is 2 years old, friendly, playful, food-motivated, and packed with enthusiasm for pretty much everything. He’s enjoyed meeting other dogs here and is always ready to play.

He’d love a higher-activity home that can share his adventurous spirit. Treat-based negotiations are fully accepted as you work on his leash skills and manners together and help him become the very best boy he can be. 🐾

Monday dragging a little? Sparkie says GET UP. We have things to do.

🐶 Good with other dogs
🐱 Cats: Unknown at this time
👧 Children: Unknown at this time
🤝 Meet-and-greets with household members and dogs are required/encouraged.

Sparkie (male, 2yrs, mixed-breed medium, 33lbs) is available for adoption at our Northpointe PetSmart Adoption Center, 9950 N. Newport Hwy. Open daily, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.

Every update we receive fills our hearts with joy. Then there are updates like this that truly bring tears to our eyes. 🧡

Meet Tripp, short for Triple Threat and previously named Star-Lord. This incredible pup, a little over a year old, arrived in our care October 2023. We partnered with SCRAPS after he was found as a stray with a fractured hind leg.

We knew the road ahead wouldn't be easy, but we knew Tripp was special and deserved a second chance. After two surgeries to repair his leg, our veterinary team made the difficult decision to amputate. From October through January, Tripp recovered, healed, and shared his outgoing personality with his foster family.

Since his adoption in January 2024, Tripp has been surrounded by love. His family shares that all he wants is to be close to his people. He's a lover boy who enjoys walks, snuggles, and sunbathing.

Best of all, he doesn't even realize that he's missing a leg. His family says that having 3 legs doesn't stop him from living his best life.

Many animals who come through our doors have experienced pain, uncertainty, and loneliness. Stories like Tripp's remind us why we give every animal the chance to find the love, comfort, and future they deserve. 🧡

Tripp, we love you! 🫶 A huge THANK YOU to his family for sharing this wonderful update.

Miranda is: ✨ Demure. 🤩 Cuckoo for catnip toys. 😴 Sleepy baby.
This 9-year-old sweetheart is still waiting to find her forever home. After arriving in our care in April, Miranda has been diagnosed with Feline Atopic Skin Syndrome, an allergenic skin condition.

For Miranda, that means staying on a prescription diet to support her health and comfort. With regular veterinary care, she can live a long, fulfilling life just like any other feline.

The reality is that black cats and cats with medical conditions are the ones who are most overlooked in shelters. But Miranda is more than those labels. She's gentle, playful, and the kindest snuggle bug you'll ever meet.

Miranda deserves to live in a comfortable, loving home. She'd love to curl up beside you, follow you from room to room, and soak up your presence every day.

🧡 If you are looking for an affectionate companion to spend your days with, come meet Miranda at our PetSmart Charities Everyday Adoption Center at Northpointe PetSmart (9950 N. Newport Hwy | open daily, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

Let's help Miranda find her family. Share this post to help her reach them, or send her profile to someone who needs a little lover in their life: https://new.shelterluv.com/embed/animal/SHS-A-48967.

🚨BREAKING NEWS🚨 This certified good boy is on the loose....
He's actually not, but since we have your attention, meet Kakuna! 🧡

This nearly 2-year-old mixed breed pup is 100% lovable. He can be shy at first but give him a little time and you'll see him evolve into a playful, vibrant companion.

While he hasn't met any children or cats yet, Kakuna really comes out of his shell with canine friends. He'd thrive in a patient, active home with a doggy BFF to help build his confidence.

Come meet Kakuna at our PetSmart Charities Everyday Adoption Center at Northpointe PetSmart!
