You might say Specialized Pet Solutions owner Angela Boncz found her calling on a long journey that started with a job she didn’t want.

“I became the shipping manager from a low, low bottom position,” she remembered. “All of a sudden, I’m responsible for 200 shipments and started asking for a raise. I think I finally got 10 cents once or twice. So, I decided I am not doing this.”

Instead, she turned to Spokane Falls Community College and its orthotics and prosthetics fabrication program.

“I've always liked helping people anyhow, so I just kind of went with it," Angela said. "I had always wanted to work with animals and be a veterinarian. But I didn’t want to be in school that long.”

She found her niche in the Spokane Falls Community College program and a new passion for collecting antiques. Angela and her family like to browse antique stores. She never imagined she’d start collecting devices made to help people with mobility issues. Now, if you visit her shop in Spangle, you can view her collection and take a trip down memory lane.

“I got the orthotic with the two feet and the cable on my first internship,” Angela said. “I don’t know if I was being tested, but he threw it in the trash, and I asked if I could have them. That’s where my collection started.”

Each collectible traces the rich history of her craft, where people worked to make sure others could live their best lives. The methods and materials might differ, but Angela will tell you she loves to work with her hands and looks to some of the same principles generations before her used, only this time it’s to help those who can’t talk or ask for help.

Thank you to our friends at Donkey Dreams Sanctuary for sharing a video of a one-of-a-kind donkey named Gabriel, determined to live his best life.

Earlier this year, a cattle rancher found the foal wandering alone with a partially amputated rear leg. She didn't think he'd survive.

But Donkey Dreams Sanctuary CEO Amber Raleigh and her team in Arizona nursed him back to health. We developed a prosthetic, and Gabriel is so happy and confident now that Amber figured he’s ready to slowly join one of the sanctuary's herds.

This video shows Gabriel on his new Specialized Pet Solutions leg as he makes his way to the new herd he will likely join once all safety precautions are met. We're busy creating a second prosthetic for him. After all, he's determined to be part of the herd and live his best life. We're just grateful we helped play a role.

Our team at Specialized Pet Solutions believes in giving every animal a chance to live a full and happy life.

That’s why we’ve worked tirelessly to find the best way to help dogs under 20 pounds with mobility problems.

“At first glance, it might seem like smaller dogs would be easier to fit with leg braces,” said owner Angela Boncz. “After all, they’re lighter, less muscular, and generally easier to handle. But designing and manufacturing braces for little dogs presents unique challenges.”

That’s because their little legs demand perfection. Straps, hinges, and padding must be miniaturized and lightweight, but we must ensure we’re not compromising strength or stability. This often requires custom hardware and materials that are more expensive and harder to source, but we’re all about getting it right.

“Their size shouldn’t exclude them from receiving the care they need,” Angela said. “We believe every animal deserves a chance at mobility and comfort, regardless of size.”

We’ve invested in the technology, materials, and expertise to design and fabricate braces that fit little dogs precisely.

“Many of our clients are veterinarians, rehab specialists, and pet owners who needed a solution, but couldn’t find it,” Angela explained. “We listened and created real-world solutions.”

After all, that’s what we’re all about – making sure your best friend has a chance to live their best life.

You only have to watch a video of Jasper and Princess Leia to understand how they want to run, play, and jump like other sheep. They live in paradise, on the Magical Creatures Sanctuary on Hawaii’s Big Island.

The problem is that both have mobility problems. Jasper lost a leg, and Princess Leia's congenital deformities prevent her from using her front legs.

“It's just heartbreaking to imagine their alternative," said Magical Creatures Founder and Co-Executive Director Helena Lundblad.

That’s where we came in. Helena found our Specialized Pet Solutions fabrication shop in Spangle, Washington, and we jumped in to make sure the two sheep had a chance to live their best lives.

First came Jasper’s prosthetic. He’s a Katahdin Hair Sheep, a breed raised for meat, not wool. He’s heavy, so getting around on three legs presented problems.

“Without this prosthetic, he would have had severe issues with his remaining legs,” Helena explained. “That’s why we are so grateful he has never had any issues with pressure sores. He’s super comfortable in it.”

It’s the same story for Princess Leia. She’s about six months old right now. But a congenital deformity forced her to use her knees to walk. That works when you’re little. Not so much when you mature and weigh over 120 pounds. We developed custom braces that allow her legs to stay in their natural position but provide an extension for support.

“She took to them way faster than I expected," Helena said. “She immediately started walking around, and then she started playing, and she was just so happy to be up on her legs as she had never been before.”

We’re grateful to know Princess Leia and Jasper are busy playing at Magical Creatures Sanctuary. That hope is what guides our work every day.

"It means everything to me that we can provide them with this life, mobility, enrichment, and a family," said Helena. "They have each other. They live with one more handicapped sheep in a little family.”

We just shared the story of Nicco, the former K9 Cop, and his handler, Officer Keith Bogdanovich, and the steps the two took after Nicco lost a leg.

The two live in Calumet City, Illinois. Considering that’s a 27-hour drive from our shop in Spangle, Washington, you’ll understand why our unique casting kits are critical to helping your animal regain mobility.

Each kit contains everything you or your vet needs to create a cast for us to fabricate your animal's brace or prosthetic.

"They give you instructions, and you wet the materials and form this cast around him," Bogdanovich explained. "It hardens after a couple of minutes, and then you send that cast in for them to make the device.”

If you’re still wondering how the kit works, we’ve got detailed videos at https://specializedpetsolutions.com/video-tutorials-dog-knee-brace-and-prosthetics/ so you can take the first step toward giving your animal a shot at their best life.

We’re thrilled to help a new four-legged friend from Cook County, Illinois, change a devastating loss into a new career.

Calumet City Police Department Officer Keith Bogdanovich always knew he wanted to be a K9 handler. He got his chance in 2022 when he paired with K9 Officer Nicco. But working drug busts, traffic stops, and missing persons searches came to an end when Nicco injured his leg while playing.

Six surgeries and endless complications later, Officer Bogdanovich made the difficult decision to amputate Nicco’s leg. But he’ll tell you, there’s no keeping Nicco down.

“He seems to be relieved the pain is gone and he can move,” Bogdanovich said. “I let him in my backyard, and he’ll see a squirrel and move so fast it’s like he has six legs.”

Bogdanovich hopes to transition Nicco to a therapy dog. He found us online. We sent him our casting kit, and the rest, as Bogdanovich says, is history.

“They give you instructions, and you wet the materials and form this cast around him,” Bogdanovich explained. “It hardens after a couple of minutes, and then you send that cast in for them to make the prosthetic."

Nicco recently got his prosthetic. “He's starting to realize that he can lean on it, so it is working out great,” said Bogdanovich.

We’re glad to hear the welcome news that our work is making a difference in your lives. After all, Nicco knows that while he’s not catching bad guys anymore, there are many more squirrels out there.

We meet the most amazing animals and their humans!

In 2021, Ludo’s family adopted him from a rescue in Thompson Falls, Montana. Back then, he had an unhealed injury to his right front leg. However, invasive surgery at Washington State University did not produce the results he needed, and Ludo’s humans didn’t want to risk another one.

That’s when Deanne, Ludo’s human grandma, found us during an online search. Now Ludo’s loving life, thanks to a brace that Specialized Pet Solution’s owner, Angela Boncz, designed.

Now Ludo’s busy chasing ground squirrels and digging in the dirt at home in Newport. He enjoys himself so much that his brace is in for some repairs. Deanne is confident the device gives him enough support to prevent further injuries. We’re just glad this busy dog has a chance to live his best life.

Oscar, the three-year-old Great Dane Mastiff cross, knows a thing or two about being active. Just ask his humans, Tom and Renee Sroufe, from North Bend, Washington.

They love to run cross-country. So does Oscar. “He just runs and bounces off trees,” Renee said. “He runs too hard for his own good.”

Oscar injured his CCL. That’s the canine equivalent of what we know as our ACL. The vet wanted to do surgery, but the price tag and threat of four months with Oscar only able to walk on a leash sent Tom and Renee to our Specialized Pet Solutions shop in Spangle.

“We got a brace for his left leg, and we kept it on him,” Renee remembered. “He got better and stopped limping completely. Every time he went into the woods, I put on the brace and let him off the leash, and he could put his full weight on it.”

But now Oscar, Renee, and Tom are back. This time, Oscar injured his right leg. We fit him for a second brace. Renee’s sure he’ll be off and running in no time. We’re just grateful for the chance to let that big lug live his best life.

FIREWORKS AND YOUR PET!

Like them…or not…fireworks will be an element of every Fourth of July.

Canine hearing is extremely sensitive, allowing them to hear low-volume sounds from great distances. While you may not know the FedEx truck that has stopped three doors down from your home, your dog is right there…at the front door…barking.

Consider the sound intensity of fireworks. The detonations are loud and, in almost all cases, unexpected. Canines lack an understanding of the celebration and hear enormously loud and unanticipated explosions.

Your dog is uncertain whether these extremely loud noises pose a threat, so it becomes frightened and anxious. Some dogs feel “trapped,” and as a result, more dogs run away on the Fourth of July than on any other day!

Some Recommendations:

To begin, keep your dog indoors. Please make sure that there is no possibility of escape.

Create a safe room or safe space for your dog.

Place a dog bed and/or blankets in the room, scatter favorite toys and treats, and try to spend time nearby.

Tiled rooms, such as bathrooms, often worsen the effects of lacking fabrics, carpet, and sound-absorbing materials.

Make certain to take them for a long walk before the anticipated start of the fireworks. Ensure that your dog is secured on its leash during this walk.
Unanticipated explosions may cause your dog to bolt.

If your dog continues to struggle despite these measures, consider speaking with your veterinarian about your dog’s severe anxiety.

There’s a party going on in Spangle right now! We won’t tell you how old she is, but Specialized Pet Solutions owner Angela Boncz is celebrating her birthday! It’s challenging to total how many animals she’s helped live their best lives. But we estimate it’s somewhere near 6,200 animals. We’re so proud of her commitment, creativity, and determination to help all animals live full and happy lives. If they could talk, we’re sure the animals she’s helped would be singing, howling, braying, or oinking their version of "Happy Birthday."
