You might say Specialized Pet Solutions owner Angela Boncz found her calling on a long journey that started with a job she didn’t want.
“I became the shipping manager from a low, low bottom position,” she remembered. “All of a sudden, I’m responsible for 200 shipments and started asking for a raise. I think I finally got 10 cents once or twice. So, I decided I am not doing this.”
Instead, she turned to Spokane Falls Community College and its orthotics and prosthetics fabrication program.
“I've always liked helping people anyhow, so I just kind of went with it," Angela said. "I had always wanted to work with animals and be a veterinarian. But I didn’t want to be in school that long.”
She found her niche in the Spokane Falls Community College program and a new passion for collecting antiques. Angela and her family like to browse antique stores. She never imagined she’d start collecting devices made to help people with mobility issues. Now, if you visit her shop in Spangle, you can view her collection and take a trip down memory lane.
“I got the orthotic with the two feet and the cable on my first internship,” Angela said. “I don’t know if I was being tested, but he threw it in the trash, and I asked if I could have them. That’s where my collection started.”
Each collectible traces the rich history of her craft, where people worked to make sure others could live their best lives. The methods and materials might differ, but Angela will tell you she loves to work with her hands and looks to some of the same principles generations before her used, only this time it’s to help those who can’t talk or ask for help.
