National Rescue Dog Day was founded in 2018 by Lisa Wiehebrink, author and Executive Director of Tails That Teach, inspired by her own rescue dog, Cooper. Cooper was rescued from a Los Angeles shelter after being found abandoned in a vacant lot — and his story became the inspiration for a day dedicated to honoring rescue dogs everywhere.

Rescue dogs are truly extraordinary. They become loyal best friends, beloved family members, emotional support companions, and even service dogs who change lives every day. They comfort us during our hardest moments, bring joy into our homes, and love with a kind of purity that is impossible to measure.
