As an all-volunteer 501C3 rescue group in Sioux Falls South Dakota, SEPR's mission is to promote responsible Pit Bull ownership, provide breed education, combat pet overpopulation through community outreach, and find qualified homes for sound Pit Bull dogs in the United States. Because of our love for dogs and our knowledge of each dog's particular situation and needs, we work hard to make sure each placement is the best one possible for both the dog and the adoptive family. Please do not be discouraged by our application process—think of us as doggie matchmakers! We know our dogs inside and out and will work with you before, during, and after the adoption process to find the right dog for you and to make the transition into your home a smooth and successful one—that is our commitment to you and to these dogs. Part of that is controlling the pet population, as hundreds of thousands of unwanted animals end up at shelters annually. Sadly, many of them don’t make it out of the shelter alive—and the odds of finding “happily ever after” are especially stacked against Pit Bull type dogs. For these reasons, SEPR makes sure that every dog that comes into our rescue is spayed or neutered before being adopted into a forever home. If you cannot afford to have your dog spayed or neutered, please contact us—financial assistance may be available. If your dog is spayed or neutered, consider contributing to SEPR, as the routine medical procedures for our dogs(spay/neuter, microchip, shots) are one of the biggest expenses the rescue has. Above all, spread the word—a “fixed” dog is a happier, healthier dog!

$5 FRIDAY… Sweet, Skinny Boy Burke ❤️❤️❤️

Some dogs speak novels without making a sound.

That has definitely been the case with our super skinny new addition, Burke.

Burke is a local rescue dog. His shelter reached out to us because Burke was losing weight and losing his mind.

After one look into this confused dogs’s eyes, we knew we had to help him. We begged and begged for a foster home for him for weeks.

Each time the shelter reached out to us, we could tell the situation was becoming more and more desperate. Burke was hanging on by a thread.

By some divine intervention, a family had seen another dog we were looking for a foster home for and applied to foster.

Luckily for Burke, these angels joined our foster team just in the nick of time to save him. ✨

The volunteer who went to pick Burke up described him as frantic. He was hungry, he was lonely, and he was so desperate for any little kindness to hang onto.

He rode to his foster home constantly touching the driver. You could tell in his eyes how thankful he was.

When he finally reached his foster home, the real work began. We set up a feeding schedule for Burke. We let him relax and decompress. We set him up with a schedule, so he knew what to expect, and could start trusting again.

And of course, we took him to the vet. At the vet, we discovered that not only was Burke emaciated and mentally beat down, he was also likely feeling pretty crummy with Giardia and a badly broken canine tooth that needed extraction. 🦷

This poor dog had not only endured months and months of stress and loneliness at a shelter, but he was in extreme pain as well! 💔

We want to be very clear about something. This is not a shelter problem. This is a society problem. Too many people are neglecting or dumping dogs, too many people are complaining and doing nothing to help, and too many people are turning a blind eye.

WE CANNOT DO THIS ALONE!

10/29/26 UPDATE: ZERO foster applications have been received to help Fred.

🚨💔 THIS IS WHAT FOUR MONTHS IN A KENNEL CAN DO TO A DOG. FOSTER HOME NEEDED NOW‼️

His name is Fred. He's barely a year old, and he's slowly unraveling behind kennel walls.

The stress has become so overwhelming that Fred has begun hurting himself.

But here's what breaks our hearts the most…

Outside that kennel, Fred is a completely different dog. Affectionate, playful, loving, and desperate for human connection.

He's not a bad dog. He's a young dog who is struggling in an environment he cannot escape.

We've begged. We've shared. We've pleaded.
