As an all-volunteer 501C3 rescue group in Sioux Falls South Dakota, SEPR's mission is to promote responsible Pit Bull ownership, provide breed education, combat pet overpopulation through community outreach, and find qualified homes for sound Pit Bull dogs in the United States. Because of our love for dogs and our knowledge of each dog's particular situation and needs, we work hard to make sure e

ach placement is the best one possible for both the dog and the adoptive family. Please do not be discouraged by our application process—think of us as doggie matchmakers! We know our dogs inside and out and will work with you before, during, and after the adoption process to find the right dog for you and to make the transition into your home a smooth and successful one—that is our commitment to you and to these dogs. Part of that is controlling the pet population, as hundreds of thousands of unwanted animals end up at shelters annually. Sadly, many of them don’t make it out of the shelter alive—and the odds of finding “happily ever after” are especially stacked against Pit Bull type dogs. For these reasons, SEPR makes sure that every dog that comes into our rescue is spayed or neutered before being adopted into a forever home. If you cannot afford to have your dog spayed or neutered, please contact us—financial assistance may be available. If your dog is spayed or neutered, consider contributing to SEPR, as the routine medical procedures for our dogs(spay/neuter, microchip, shots) are one of the biggest expenses the rescue has. Above all, spread the word—a “fixed” dog is a happier, healthier dog!

And so their journey begins. 🖤

More than 25 hours on the road ahead…miles that will carry them toward healing, both physically and emotionally, and toward lives they don’t even know are waiting for them yet.

Tonight, we simply ask that you keep them in your thoughts.

May the miles pass quickly.
May the journey be safe.
And may tomorrow mark the beginning of everything they deserved all along.

🖤 STILL SHE RISES. 🖤

A few weeks ago, Maya Angelou was picked up by Animal Control while going into labor.

Terrified. Unsure of every person around her. Protecting the only thing she knew she had left, her newborn puppies.

The stress was simply too much. Maya was unable to produce the milk her babies needed, and they ultimately had to be removed from her care so they could survive.

And suddenly, Maya was alone.

We knew this girl had already been through enough.

So when she came into SEPR, we didn't immediately ask her to endure one more frightening experience. We gave her time.

Time to decompress.

Time to trust.

Time to discover soft blankets, toys, snuggles and what it feels like to live inside a home with people who expect absolutely nothing from her except to simply be a dog.

And man, has she embraced those foster freedoms. ❤️

Last week, Maya was finally ready for her next big step and made the trip to Tea Vet Clinic to see Dr. Tom.

And today, we can officially say:

Maya Angelou will never produce another litter of puppies.

Dr. Tom estimates Maya is approximately 5–6 years old, and during her spay, the condition and size of her uterus told yet another piece of her story.

This was not this girl's first litter.

And very likely, not her second.

Somewhere along the way, Maya's body had been asked to produce puppies again and again. Whether because someone couldn't afford to have her altered or simply didn't care enough to do it, we'll never know.

What we DO know is that chapter is over.

Her spay is complete.
Her microchip is in.
Her bloodwork looks good.
Her recurring urinary issues were evaluated and treated.

And her body finally belongs to her.

Now the next part of Maya's journey begins…building confidence, learning to trust and discovering just how wonderful life can be when nobody is asking anything from you.

Maya Angelou once wrote, “Still I rise.”

This girl already has.

THIS IS WHAT STRESS CAN LOOK LIKE. 💔

You see Harmony sitting beside someone, getting some love.

What you don’t see is that she sat still for maybe two seconds.

Since Harmony returned to SEPR on Saturday, there has been pacing. Panting. Searching. Moving from place to place, trying to figure out where she belongs.

She is safe.
She is loved.
She is being cared for.

But Harmony doesn’t know that yet.

All she knows is that the life and home she knew for the past eight years are gone.

And that is exactly why we are still searching so hard for an adoptive home for this girl.

Yes, we can foster her. Yes, we can care for her. Yes, we can help her through this transition.

But what we desperately do NOT want is for Harmony to finally settle in, decide this is home, and then have to experience another goodbye when an adopter eventually comes along.

At 11 years old, she deserves to unpack her bags one more time.

Don’t let the number 11 fool you, either. This girl still has plenty of terrier tucked inside that brindle body. 😂 If you have a stash of those BarkBox rip-and-shred toys, Harmony would be delighted to demonstrate exactly how quickly they can be destroyed.

She needs:
♥️ A home without children
♥️ No feline friends
♥️ Someone who understands and appreciates that terrier drive
♥️ Someone willing to give a senior girl the stability she desperately needs

And next Wednesday, Harmony has another hurdle ahead of her. She will undergo a significant dental with quite a few extractions. It won’t be an easy day, but those painful teeth need to come out so she can feel better and protect her health moving forward.

We know there isn’t a long line of people waiting to adopt an 11-year-old dog.

Sometimes people see senior and immediately think, I won’t have enough time.

We look at Harmony and see something different.

There is still so much LIFE in this girl.

And after watching her struggle with losing everything familiar to her, we want more than anything to give her the chance to stop searching.

Callie has spent the last year perfecting herself so that she can win her forever family's hearts in time for pumpkin season! Callie is a sweet, sensitive soul that values calm consistency. She does well with the cats and resident dog in her foster home. Her playful side will glow when you give her a stuffed toy, especially her turtle. Callie is a smart girl who thrives with clear expectations and guidance from her humans. She is always down for a walk or training session to help her snuggle in for the evening.
