You’re watching Four Neal’s Naughty Puppy School students introducing the COME command to their Dogs for the very first time.

And noticed something.

Every dog comes all the way to its Owner and sits directly in front of them.

That’s not an accident.

The first time I teach COME, I’m already teaching what I want COME .
to look like for the rest of that dog’s life.

Whether it’s a puppy coming from 15 feet away or Magnum, recalling from hundreds of yards away, the command means exactly the same thing.

Come all the way to me and sit directly in front of me.

We introduced recall as a GREAT EVENT, build success in a distraction, free environment, gradually add distance, duration, and real world distractions.

I’m not trying to teach these dogs to COME to their owners. I’m teaching them to LOVE coming to their owners.

And here is something else I love about this video.

You’ve seen where their recall training started. They’ve since demonstrated the advanced off-leash obedience required to earn that recognition.

That’s what my numbing consistency can accomplish.

But perhaps the most important thing about this video is WHO is giving the commands.

It’s not me. It’s my students.

Much of my training is done virtually. I demonstrate with Magnum & Uni while coaching you through working with your pup.

The dog has no idea I’m instructing you.

The first time I teach “come”, I am already teaching what I want “come” to look like for the rest of that dogs life.

Meet Roscoe, a two year-old rescue, and his owner Dallas. We have been working towards this for about six months.

You’re watching Roscoe respond to the “come” command for the very first time!

Dallas put Roscoe in a sit about 20 feet away.
Then he gives Roscoe the verbal command “come”, accompanied by the hand signal we’ve taught Roscoe.

Watch Roscoe!

He comes right to Dallas, tail wagging, and sits directly in front of him.

Exactly where he’s supposed to finish!

And here’s what I want Puppy owners to understand.

This is the same way I taught Magnum and Uni to come, and the same way I teach all my students to introduce recall to their dogs.

Whether it Roscoe coming from 20 feet or Magnum coming from hundreds of yards away, the command means the same thing.

Come all the way to me and sit directly in front of me.

The distance, duration and distractions come later.

First, we establish clear communication and making come to us a GREAT EVENT.

I am not trying to teach Roscoe to Dallas, I’m teaching Roscoe to LOVE coming to Dallas Barnes

And here is another important point.

Dallas and his family live right around the corner from me. We’ve used a combination of virtual sessions, where I demonstrate with Magnum and Uni, and in person training.

But look who’s handling Roscoe.

Dallas is the trainer!

That’s exactly what I want.

You’ve seen Magnum’s recall around coyotes. Now watch Uni!
Another beautiful sunrise on the golf course, and another encounter with our resident coyotes.
With three coyotes present, I made sure to keep Uni a good distance from them.
Uni is sitting while I pan the camera to show you the coyotes.
Then I then I call her:
UNI-“come”
Watch her response.
This is what we’ve been practicing since Uni came home with me as a 10 week old rescue puppy.
No e-collar. No shock collar.
I introduced recall as a great event, long before it becomes a command.
We start in a distraction free environment, build success, practice constantly, and gradually introduce real world distractions.
I’m not trying to teach Uni to come to me. I’m teaching her to love coming to me.

And that’s exactly how I trained Magnum.

Two different dogs. Same training philosophy.
Coyotes are part of our environment on the golf course, we’re Magnum, Uni and I spend a lot of of our off leash time.

IMPORTANT: I’m not recommending that anyone seek out coyotes or other wildlife to practice recall. These are animals regularly encounter, and maintaining a safe distance and avoiding confrontation are important.
But if I’m gonna give my dog, the freedom to be off leash, reliable recall is the most important skills they need.
Recall should be introduced early, practiced often and proofed with real world distractions.

Recall gets your dog back. Impulse control keeps him there.
This morning just after sunrise, Magnum and I encountered a coyote on the golf course.
Magnum is sitting while the coyote is about 40 yards away, barking at him.
I release Magnum with “free” and he takes off toward the coyote.
Then I give him the command that matters most:
COME
Magnum disengages, turns around, comes back to me and finishes exactly where I have taught him to finish. Sitting in front of me.
But that’s only half of what makes this video special.
After Magnum comes back, the coyote continues toward us. He gets to within roughly 20 yards, barking and eventually running past us.
Magnum is obviously very interested. Watch his eyes. He knows exactly where that coyote is.
But he doesn’t break his “sit”.
That’s impulse control.
And there is no E collar or shock collar involved here.
This is possible because of the way I teach recall.
I introduce recall as a great event before I ever turn it into a command.
From the beginning, I don’t want my dog coming to me because he’s worried about what happens if he doesn’t.
I want him to WANT to come to me.
We start in a distraction free environment, build success, practice over and over again, and gradually add distance, duration and real-world distractions.
I’m not trying to teach Magnum to come to me. I’m teaching him to LOVE coming to me.
What you’re watching is the finished product of that process.

If I’m gonna give Magnum the freedom to be off leash in this environment, his obedience needs to work when the real world provides a distraction I can’t control.
