345 yards. One “come”. And then something we never expected.

This video was from a few years ago, and it may be one of the best demonstrations of recall I’ve ever captured with Magnum.

He’s sitting with my son Jack 345 yards across the fairway.

I’m on the other side.

I yell:

“Magnum-Come”

He immediately takes off toward me.

And then something happens that we absolutely did not plan.

Another dog comes running toward Magnum and tries to engage him.

This is the moment that matters.

Magnum could have stopped.

He could’ve gone to investigate.

He could’ve decided another dog was more interesting than me yelling for him from 345 yards away.

He doesn’t.

He stays on his line, runs right past the distraction, comes all the way across the fairway and finishes exactly where I taught him to finish:

Sitting at my feet.

This is why I say recall should be introduced early, practiced often and proof with real-world distractions.

You can’t predict when the distraction is going to show up.

In this case, the distraction literally came running onto the golf course.

I’m not trying to teach my dogs to simply understand the word “COME”.

I’m teaching them to LOVE coming to me.

That’s the recall I want.

Fast. Happy. Reliable.

Even when the real world gets in the way.

Apparently I’ve been wasting Uni’s talents on dog training. 😂⚾️

She starts in a Sit, waits for FREE, and then comes flying past me like she was shot out of a cannon.

And check out the play on the ball!

Clean pick up on one hop and she’s off to the races.

So I’m officially putting Major league baseball on notice:

If anybody needs a late ending defensive replacement, I’ve got your girl.

Speed. Range. Great glove.

We may need to work on giving the ball back to the umpire. 😂

How do you communicate clearly with two off leash dogs at the same time?

This is the system I developed for Magnum and Uni.

Uni is trained using left-handed hand signals.

Magnum is trained, using right handed hand signals.

And when I use voice commands, their names are part of the command.

It is not simply “sit”.

It’s “Uni sit”, or “Magnum sit”.

That gives me multiple ways to communicate with each dog individually, even when they’re working together.

But there’s another important part of this video.

We practice this stuff in a distraction, free environment first.

I can’t expect Magnum and Uni to respond reliably on the golf course around workers, sprinklers, rabbits, squirrels, other dogs and coyotes if we can’t get it right here first.

Build success first. Then add distractions.

In the demonstration, you’ll see me communicate with them using voice commands and hand signals, and then using hand signals only.

Dogs naturally communicate through body language, which is one reason I believe hand signals are so valuable.

Two dogs. Two conversations. Clear communication.

Always be testing that recall

It’s just after sunrise, Uni and I are on the golf course, and we’re doing one of her favorite things— playing ball.

But we are also training.

Uni starts in a sit.

I throw the ball.

She waits until she’s released with FREE and takes off after it.

then, when she’s halfway there:

“COME”

She immediately turns around, comes running back to me and sits at my feet.

And what happens next is important.

FREE

She gets released right back to the thing she wanted-the ball.

Coming to me doesn’t mean the fun is over.

Sometimes coming to me is what allows the fun to continue.

I didn’t just teach Uni to come to me. I taught her to LOVE coming to me.

So when the distraction isn’t a ball-when it’s a rabbit, another dog or even a coyote-we’ve already practiced making that decision over and over again.

Recall should be introduced early, practiced often and proofed with real-world distractions.

Always test that recall.
