Many people think mats are just tangled hair, but matting is actually very painful for dogs. Tight mats pull constantly on the skin, restrict movement, trap moisture, dirt, and bacteria, and can even hide sores, infections, bruising, and parasites. In severe cases, matting can affect a dog’s comfort, mobility, and overall health.
The large amount of coat shown in these photos wasn’t just extra fluff—it was a heavy, tight layer that this sweet dog had been carrying around every day. Imagine wearing a sweater that is constantly pulling on your skin and never being able to take it off. 💔
For the safety and comfort of the dog, the kindest option was a fresh start with a short shave-down. While it may not be the haircut everyone hopes for, removing painful mats is always more important than preserving coat length.
