If your cat is tearing up furniture, door frames, or carpet, they’re not being “bad”, scratching is natural for cats. :)

It helps them stretch, mark territory, and keep their claws healthy. The problem usually comes from not having the right scratching options in the right places.

Try placing scratching posts near the spots they already target, especially around sleeping areas or entrances. Different cats prefer different textures too, so test cardboard, rope, or carpet-style scratchers to see what they like best. You can also use cat-safe deterrent sprays on furniture while rewarding them anytime they use their scratching post instead.

A few small changes can save your furniture and keep your cat happy at the same time. 😺

Is your cat peeing on your bed, clothes, couch, or random spots in the house?

Your cat usually is not being “bad” or trying to make you mad when doing that. A lot of times, they’re stressed, anxious, uncomfortable, or trying to tell you something is wrong. Things like dirty litter boxes, changes in the home, other animals, stress, or even medical issues can trigger this behavior.

The good news is that this problem can usually be improved once you figure out the real reason behind it.

Understanding why cats do something is the first step to fixing it the right way.

That’s what we do at Furrocity Feline Behavior Counseling. 😺 We help cat owners better understand their cats and bring peace back into the home for them and their cats.

New cat not getting along with your current cat? Hissing, hiding, or fighting can happen when introductions are rushed.

Cats are territorial. The fix is slow, controlled integration. Start with full separation. Let them get used to each other’s scent using bedding or toys. Feed them on opposite sides of a closed door. Gradually allow visual contact, then short supervised interactions. Keep everything calm and positive. No need to force it.

Done right, most cats can learn to coexist and even bond.

Excessive vocalization in cats is usually communication, not just "random meowing".

Cats often meow more due to unmet needs (hunger, boredom, attention), stress, medical issues, or learned behavior where vocalizing gets a response.

The fix starts with ruling out health concerns, then tightening structure: consistent feeding schedules, daily interactive play to burn energy, and not reinforcing attention-seeking meows. Reward quiet behavior instead of responding to noise, and create a stable, enriched environment so your cat doesn’t feel the need to “shout” to be heard.

Litter box issues are one of the most common reasons people reach out, and they’re almost never about a cat being “difficult.” Inappropriate urination is usually a signal that something is off, whether it’s stress, a medical concern, or the litter box setup itself.

Cats are extremely sensitive to their environment, and even small changes can disrupt their habits. The good news is this is highly fixable once the root cause is identified.

Litter box avoidance usually signals a diagnostic error in the feline's environment or health. Ensure you have one box per cat plus one extra, located in quiet and accessible areas. If the box is clean and the layout is correct but the issue persists, a medical evaluation is required to rule out physical discomfort.

At Furrocity Feline Behavior Consulting, the focus is on finding that cause and restoring consistency so your cat feels secure using the litter box again. 🐈🧡

If your cat is peeing outside the litter box, something is off.

Check the basics for your cat first. Keep the litter box clean and make sure you have enough of them. One per cat, plus one extra, in quiet areas.

Look at the litter as in the color, size, smell, etc. Strong scents or texture changes can cause problems. Stick with unscented, fine-grain litter.

Rule out medical issues so to make sure they are healthy. Sudden changes can mean a urinary problem, so a vet check matters.

Reduce stress for them as much as you can. Changes in the home, new pets, or disruptions can trigger this behavior.

Clean accidents with an enzymatic cleaner so the smell is fully gone.

Fix the cause, and the behavior usually corrects itself.

Play aggression can feel confusing because it often looks like your cat is being “mean” out of nowhere. Biting, grabbing, and scratching usually happen when play gets too intense or when hands are used as toys.

The fix starts with redirecting that energy. Use wand toys, laser pointers, and structured play sessions to let your cat hunt safely. End play with a meal or treat to complete the natural cycle.

Consistency turns rough play into controlled, healthy interaction.
