Menchie’s Happily Ever After!

From anonymous in a sea of overlooked shelter pitties… to completely adored—Menchie has officially found her forever.

She entered our Homeward Bound Program at K9-1 ready to learn, grow, and become her best self, but after just one week, it turned out there was nothing to ā€œfix.ā€ Menchie was already perfect.

With no challenges left to work on, she returned to H.A.L.O. to wait for the family meant for her… and she didn’t have to wait long. Her new dad made the trip from Palm Bay, and the moment they met, Menchie was glued to him. The connection was instant. You could feel it—she had found her person.

The Homeward Bound Program proves again that sometimes, all a dog needs is the right environment to shine.

To her new family: thank you for seeing her worth, loving her fully, and giving her the life she always deserved.

Happy tails, sweet girl. You were never just another face in the crowd, you were just waiting to be found.

šŸ†˜ Help Save Lulu - A Puppy Fighting for Her Life! šŸ†˜

Meet Lulu, a 19-week-old puppy whose life almost ended before it truly began. After being attacked twice by another dog in her home, Lulu was brought to the ER with two broken legs, deep lacerations, and unable to walk. Her family decided to euthanize her, but as Lulu gently kissed the technician holding her, that tech picked up the phone and called us instead.

We couldn’t let her die.

H.A.L.O. stepped in, and Lulu is now safe — but she’s in unimaginable pain. She has a urinary catheter, can’t stand, and faces extensive orthopedic surgery on both her right front and rear legs. She’ll need multiple procedures, splints, hospital care, and long-term rehab to walk again.

We’re urgently raising funds to cover:
• Double orthopedic surgery
• Pain management & hospitalization
• Imaging, meds, splints, & post-op care
• Rehab so Lulu can walk and play again.

Help Lulu Today! šŸ‘‡
https://giving.classy.org/campaign/699520/donate

šŸ’œ Despite everything, Lulu remains gentle, trusting, and full of love. Please help us show her that her life matters. Every donation brings her closer to healing. Every share helps her story be seen.

SALT WATER TOXICITY AND YOUR CANINE
By Megan Davis DVM
Suburban Animal Hospital

As summer weather approaches many owners are tempted to take their dogs to the beach or on the boat. You know the risks of heat stroke and what to watch for; but do you know about salt toxicity? This can be a common but serious problem in Southwest Florida. Knowing the symptoms could be life saving for your pup.

Initial signs are usually diarrhea and occasionally vomiting. The animal will likely also have excessive thirst. This then progresses to lethargy (which could easily be dismissed as simply being tired from a day out). Pets become uncoordinated (walking like they're drunk), anxious and confused. They may develop tremors and, in severe cases, the dog starts have seizures which may be fatal.

Salt toxicity doesn't just occur from intentional drinking of seawater. Dogs can also ingest large amounts from jumping into the water and many cases I've seen were from playing fetch with balls in the water or at the water’s edge.

If you suspect salt toxicity in your dog, you should seek veterinary care immediately. The vet is likely to recommend bloodwork to determine the sodium level in your pet’s blood then fluids to try and flush it out. Depending on severity this often needs to be done slowly as lowering the sodium level too quickly can cause swelling of the brain; thus hospitalization may be necessary.

The best way to prevent this is by providing lots of access to fresh clean water and have your dog take frequent breaks in the shade. Monitor them closely so you can disrupt them if they start drinking from the ocean. And be sure to rinse the saltwater off their fur when you get home.

ā€¼ļøWhy We Strongly Recommend the Leptospirosis Vaccineā€¼ļø

Leptospirosis is a serious and potentially life-threatening disease that affects both animals and humans—making it what’s known as a zoonotic disease. It’s caused by bacteria found in the urine of infected animals and can be spread through contaminated water, soil, or direct contact with infected pets. Even dogs that live primarily indoors are at risk, especially after heavy rain or flooding.

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect your dog—and your entire household—from this dangerous illness.

Recently, this hit close to home. Our own veterinarian, Dr. Jason Kennell, likely contracted leptospirosis from a contagious patient. He was hospitalized for five days, after battling symptoms for nearly a week. This has been a sobering reminder of just how real and serious this disease can be—not only for your pets but for the people who care for them.

We can’t stress enough how important it is to vaccinate. It’s a simple step that can prevent significant suffering for both pets and people.

Finally, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of our wonderful clients who have been so patient and understanding while we adjusted schedules. Being down Dr. Jason and allowing his wife, Dr. Kaci, time to be by his side meant some changes in our daily operations—and your support has meant the world to our team.

Thank you for trusting us with your pets—and for being part of our extended clinic family. šŸ’™šŸ’™šŸˆšŸ•

Heartbroken our boy hasn’t found his perfect home yet.. he would be perfect for an active home that can match his energy & love!! Someone please don’t let his stay back at HALO last long! ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Jax is back at the shelter today—but we’re not giving up!

We were so close. He had an adopter lined up, and everything seemed perfect… but during the meet and greet, it was clear that the dogs just weren’t the right match.

Jax is an energetic, playful young boy, and the resident dog was more of a laid-back lounger.

While we want nothing more than a home for Jax, we also know how important it is to find the right fit—for everyone involved.

We’re incredibly grateful to the Homeward Bound Program and K9 1 Training & Consulting for the time they spent helping build Jax’s confidence.

In just two weeks, they gave him tools we’ll continue using as he settles back at the shelter. He’s come a long way—and we’re not done yet.

Please share to help this awesome 1-year-old boy find the home he deserves.

Jax is goofy, affectionate, full of life, and ready to bring joy to a family that’s just as fun and active as he is.

Let’s find his person. Let’s find his match. Let’s get Jax home!

Someone fall in love w this dude PLEASE! He is an energetic goober who we have fallen in love with here at K9 1. Come meet him before he has to go back to HALO!!

Jax’s face when we told him he still doesn’t have a home…

It’s hard to understand how a dog this wonderful hasn’t been scooped up yet.

Jax has spent the last few weeks in the Homeward Bound Program at K9 1 Training & Consulting, and he’s absolutely shined. He’s proven to be everything you could want in a dog—loving, loyal, playful, and eager to please.

He adores other dogs. He lights up around people. He listens well and is so ready to be someone’s best friend.

But on Tuesday, Jax comes back to the shelter. And for a dog who was once absolutely terrified here, that breaks our hearts.

Please, help us keep Jax moving forward by sharing his story and helping him find the family he’s been waiting for.

Let’s not let this sweet soul take a step back.

Adopt Jax!
