Looking for your next puppy? If you plan to buy from a breeder, don’t miss this post!

It can be hard to choose a breeder but here is one key thing to look for…health testing!

When they say the parents are “health tested” that may simply mean the parents have had a DNA genetic screening which is NOT the same as having registered health testing to check for issues like hip dysplasia, heart murmurs and knee issues.

You can easily learn what health tests are recommended for your specific breed by visiting the OFA website. Watch this video to see how to find it step by step!

From there you can search for your breeder and their dogs and see if they done those tests. You can also ask the breeder for the dog’s registered name or CHIC number to look up in the OFA database.

DOODLE PARENTS: this applies to you as well! There are some great doodle breeders out there who are health testing and really trying to create healthy nice dogs, but there are many more who are NOT! Ask questions and look for the proof to back it up!

As it gets hotter out it is important to know the sighs of heat exhaustion in your pup!
Dogs can rapidly over heat and develop heat exhaustion or stroke when their body temperature passes 104°F.
Watch for excessive panting, really pink/red gums, thick long drool, rapid heart rate, pacing lethargy, restlessness or dizziness.
If you notice any of these signs, move your dog to shade and offer small sips of cool water. Once you notice your dog having a heat stroke please contact your veterinarian immediately.
Summer days are for playing, but let’s keep it safe and cool😎 shade, plenty of water and breaks are essential for a doggy summer☀️💦

Does your pup shake, hide, or pace when a thunderstorm rolls in or fireworks go off? Noise sensitivity is tough to deal with but you can be your pups safe haven! Making a crate bunker or dedicated safe space makes a huge difference. Here is how I set up a dog’s crate bunker!

If your dog enjoys going into their crate, padding it down with some cozy blankets can make them feel comfortable and relaxed. If your dog tears up blankets or bedding you can leave the crate empty and pad the outside. Having some extra blankets, dog beds, pillows, etc to throw on top of the crate creates a great noise muffler! I like to have a noise machine to drown out the extra noise as well as using a box fan. Giving them a prepared frozen or lickable treats can keep them distracted. If your dog is experiencing high anxiety with storms and sounds, consulting your veterinarian for medication or supplements can be helpful. There’s no reason to let them suffer!

When it comes to roadtrips or even quick outings I like to be prepared! Here are my must haves for any car ride:
-Water…especially when it’s hot. It’s always great to be prepared for your pups hydration💦
-temperature monitor. If you ever need to leave a pup or an animal in the car it’s always best to have an extra safety measure when it comes to temperature🥵
-slip lead. I always carry one or an extra leash just in case I run into a loose dog or even quick potty breaks my dog may need!
-treats. This is also great in case you run into a loose dog but always appreciated by your furry one🦴
-first aid kit. This is a must have for yourself or for your dog! It’s best to always carry the essentials in case of emergencies ⛑️
-p**p bags. P**p bags are ALWAYS needed lol
-Air horn. An air horn can be great for taking precautions while on a walk with your pup.
-paper towels and a regular towel. Messes happen and it’s great to always have something on hand!
I always carry leather gloves and an extra bin just in case I run into any injured wildlife that needs my help!

With summer approaching it's great to learn about safety!☀️🌊

When introducing any body of water to your pup it's best not to force them but instead build up their confidence. Forcing them can be overwhelming and can give your pup an overall scarring experience.Instead encourage verbally and with treats or toys.

An easy way to start is by taking things nice and slow! Take your time and start off with low stress experiences! Such as a riverside with low ripples of water instead of crashing waves at the beach, or the high step in a pool instead of just jumping in with them in the deep end💦

Remember to always watch your pup around bodies of water as accidents happen. You can have your pup wear a life jacket as an extra safety measure!🛟
