Ramona had a fantastic training outing in downtown Savannah at City Market and Plant Riverside District. She navigated crowds of people, rode elevators for the first time, sniffed lots of bushes, ignored passing dogs big and small, and most importantly to her made new friends💚

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a breed with a rich history dating back centuries in Wales, where they were developed as cattle-driving and farm dogs. Despite their short legs, Corgis were tough, intelligent workers tasked with moving livestock, watching over property, and staying alert to changes in their environment. These instincts remain deeply ingrained in the breed today.

Known for their intelligence, loyalty, and outgoing personalities, Pembroke Welsh Corgis thrive when they have a job to do and a strong connection with their people. Their natural awareness and protective tendencies make them excellent companions, but those same traits can sometimes contribute to behaviors like anxiety, resource guarding, or feeling responsible for managing their surroundings.

Meet Celeste, a 10-year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi who recently enrolled in our Doggie 911 program to work on her anxious and guarding behaviors. While these challenges can be influenced by genetics, life experiences, and learned behaviors, they can often be improved through structured training and clear communication.

At 10 years old, Celeste is proving that it's never too late to learn new skills and build confidence. We're excited to help her navigate the world with greater ease and show that senior dogs are more than capable of making meaningful behavioral changes.

Follow along as we share Celeste's journey! 🐾

June is PTSD Awareness Month

A 2024 National Institutes of Health (NIH) research confirms service dogs significantly reduce post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) severity, anxiety and depression compared to standard care alone. Studies show service dogs help normalize cortisol levels, physically recalibrating the veteran’s “fight or flight” stress response system. Specialized task training, like “blocking” in crowds, directly reduces social isolation and improves daily community participation.

Over the years of working with clients and their dogs, Tina and Riley are one pair that will stick with us. Tina's unwavering dedication to continue working with her dog Riley shows tremendous volumes. We wish them all the best in their next chapter of life across the country.

Here's what Tina had to say about her experience with Meika's Helping Paws:

" I happened upon Blake while I was walking Riley in Daffin Park. She was with a group of dogs, all sitting with their owners but in a tight circle talking to Blake. I was able to get her attention, waited for her to finish class and she came over to speak to me. Riley is a surrender rescue. Good with people but over reactive to dogs. She wants to play but doesn’t know how which Blake saw while we were chatting. I signed up with her right there. Two one on ones and 2 months of group sessions and Riley has calmed down tremendously. We still work on a “slow and friendly” greeting but she can sit and lay down next to dogs, walk by them with little interaction and will even stay off leash around the other dogs until I tell her to come. I wish I had found her earlier. It would have saved me a ton of money. She really understands the language of dogs and has helped me to be more confident when she is around other dogs."

A common question I get is: "How does a service dog help with POTS?"

Here's one example. When I dropped my keys at the grocery store, Avalon retrieved them for me. For many people with POTS, repeatedly bending down can cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or other symptoms. Item retrieval is a trained task that helps conserve energy, reduce symptom triggers, and increase independence.
