Meet Fling, an 8-year-old English Labrador Retriever and beloved therapy dog! 🐾💙

Fling had to take a break from visiting her many fans at the hospital while she healed from an ulcer in her right eye, wearing her cone of shame. But now she’s all smiles with the cone off and her eye fully healed, ready to brighten the day for her friends at the hospital again! 👏🐕‍🦺

👁️ Eye spy a diagnosis: Corneal Sequestrum! 🐱

Corneal sequestrum is a condition mostly unique to cats, where an area of dead corneal tissue forms due to chronic ulceration or trauma. This can happen from factors like hair rubbing against the eye (entropion) or viral infections.

As the corneal collagen dies, it turns a dark brown to black color. The only way for the eye to heal is through surgery to remove the dead tissue and replace it with a graft.

Another busy day at VEI Plano! 👩‍⚕️🐾 Dr. Liz Soler and Matthew are hard at work performing a conjunctival graft surgery this morning. This procedure involves using tissue from the eye’s conjunctiva to help heal and protect damaged areas of the cornea. Their teamwork and dedication to patient care always shine through! 💪✨

👁️ Guess the Eye Thursday! 👁️
It’s a Caiman’s eye! 🐊
Did you know that caimans have a special transparent eyelid called a nictitating membrane? This amazing feature protects their eyes underwater while still allowing them to see clearly. Their eyes are also adapted for night vision, making them excellent hunters in low light conditions. 🌙

Another fascinating fact is that caimans can even retract their eyeballs into their skulls for extra protection! How incredible are these reptilian predators?

Meet Cheyenne, a sweet 17.9-year-old Lab Mix who recently had surgery at VEI Plano. 🐾💙 Diagnosed with Palpebral Conjunctival Neoplasm—a type of tumor that forms on the delicate tissue of the eyelid. Cheyenne underwent a neoplasm mass removal and we’re thrilled to share that she has recovered beautifully! 🙌

On her follow-up visit, her mom was so impressed—you can hardly tell where the growth was! 💫 Cheyenne is a true fighter, and we’re so proud to have been a part of her journey.

Eye Spy a Diagnosis: Glaucoma 👁️🔍

Glaucoma is caused by high pressure inside the eye due to improper fluid drainage, which can be painful and damaging. It can be primary (genetic) or secondary (from other conditions).

Signs to watch for: Cloudiness, redness, squinting, and vision loss. If one eye is affected, the other might be too.

Treatment: Medications to manage pressure, and in severe cases, surgery like Endocyclophotocoagulation (ECPC) or Enucleation. Regular check-ups are crucial for early detection and effective management.
