Meet Bane! 🐾

Bane's parents drove all the way to our hospital from Las Vegas after he lost the ability to urinate on his own due to a large abdominal mass in hopes of getting surgery with our surgical oncologist, Dr. Thomson. Bane originally presented through our ER but was able to transfer to surgery the next day.

At surgery, a CT scan with a contrast study confirmed a large mass involving the prostate on both sides, extending into the muscles of the pelvis. We performed two procedures. First, using a small incision on the left side of his neck, we passed catheters through the bloodstream down to the arteries feeding the tumor and injected tiny particles to block the tumor's blood supply. We treated the arteries on both sides plus one additional feeding artery, while protecting the artery that supplies the bladder. Second, we passed a catheter up the urethra, took contrast x-rays showing the blockage extended about 9 centimeters, and placed a metal mesh stent inside the urethra to hold it open. His bladder was easily emptied after the stent was placed.

Bane did well throughout surgery and recovered uneventfully from anesthesia. He was able to go home a few days later, and we got the nicest review from his parents. "We drove from Las Vegas to have our baby taken care of and it was worth the double round trips. The staff is amazing and very knowledgeable. The updates and pictures made the process so much comforting since we are 5 hours away. I just wish I was able to give 15 or 20 paws as a rating. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give about 60 or more. Thank you so very much you made this so much emotionally easier on us."

We wish you a speedy recovery, Bane! You are the sweetest boy and our nurses loved taking care of you!

Happy Black Cat Appreciation Day!🖤

Some fun black cat facts:

🐾 Black is the most common feline color, thanks to dominant genes for eumelanin. The same pigment that affects a black cat’s fur also affects their irises. Because of this, the majority of black cats have irises with yellow/gold, orange/copper, or green pigment.

🐾Despite their prevalence, black cats are adopted less often due to what we thought were lingering superstitions. A paper that was published in 2026 determined that superstition was not the case for them being adopted less often, but it was due to lower confidence when interpreting the emotional expressions of black cats

🐾The Bombay is the only breed that is always black, though other cat breeds can have black fur. The Bombay was created in the 1950s and are nicknamed “parlor panthers” due to their good looks, sleek black coat, and gorgeous copper-orange eyes.

🐾Black cats are not bad luck—the superstition is rooted in medieval history. No one knows exactly when black cats got their bad rap, but a black cat crossing your path certainly won’t bring you bad luck.

Enjoy a mixture of photos of patients and employee pets! Meet Ninja, Crack, Frankie, Ghost, Toothless, Fish, Willow, and Toothless again as a kitten! If you have a black cat, show them some extra love today!

Did you know Monday was Spoil Your Dog day?

Meet Patches! 🐾 👑

Patches is a rescue that belongs to one of our amazing ECC employees and Cultural Ambassador, Carrie. Since Patches was adopted as a senior dog that was labeled for Hospice Care due to congestive heart failure with other medical issues, and since we didn't have an actual age for her, some other staff convinced Carrie that Patches could be 15 and therefore deserved a Quinceañera! Her favorite ER doctor that coordinates her care attended, as well as two of her fans that work in ECC who were honored as her Madrinas!

We all love you Patches! Reminder to Spoil Your Dog this week however that looks for you! Be it a long walk, a pup cup, or a beach trip- remind your pup that they are loved and spoiled!

Meet Cookie! 🍪 🐾

Cookie presented through our ER service last week after ingesting a bone that was dropped on the floor. Radiographs were done after her exam, and a large rib bone was seen in her esophagus. Luckily, our Internal Medicine doctor, Dr. Leuin, was able to perform an emergency endoscope to retrieve the bone, and Cookie was able to go home the same day!

We hope you are feeling better, Cookie!

If you ever have a pet that ingests something they are not supposed to, our ER service is open 24/7 and is always here for you and your pets!

National Immunization Awareness Month

Vaccines are one of the most effective ways to protect your pet from preventable diseases and help keep them healthy throughout their life.

Staying up to date on recommended vaccinations can reduce the risk of serious illnesses and help protect other pets in your community, too.

If you're unsure whether your pet is due for vaccines, talk with your primary care veterinarian.

Our CCS supervisors Selena and Julia want to let you know we are taking donations for Paula's Pet Pantry!

Paula's Pet Pantry is currently looking for donations for dry and canned cat and dog food, pet toys, supplies, treats, and unopened pet care items. If you would like to donate, just bring your items in and place them in the bin up front!

We try to partner with small San Diego rescues to do donation drives for them. Earlier this year we did a donation drive for SPOT rescue, and were able to collect a lot of food and supplies to help their rescued and fostered animals. If you run a recue or have one you would like to recommend for our next drive, just let us know!

Thank you for helping us take care of the animals in our community!

Our Annual Veterinary Symposium is Sunday October 4th, and we will be doing a charity raffle for Frosted Faces!

We are currently accepting donations for this raffle from gist cards, to tickets, to pet items, and other services. If you own a business and would like to contribute to our raffle, please reach out to one of the emails at the bottom of the flyer.

Frosted Faces is an amazing organization in Ramona that helps the senior pets that are often overlooked in shelters. They help rescue and rehome these senior pets so they can still have loving and fulfilling lives, while also helping manage any senior pets they rehome with medical issues. If you are open to adopting or fostering a senior pet, they are a wonderful foundation to look at.

🔥🐾 National Pet Fire Safety Day

Would your family know what to do if a fire occurred in your home?

Today is a great reminder to make sure your pets are included in your emergency preparedness plans. Keep collars and ID tags up to date, place pet alert window stickers near entrances, and designate a family member to help evacuate pets whenever possible.

It's also a good idea to keep leashes, carriers, and vaccination records in an easily accessible location so you're prepared if you need to leave quickly.

Planning ahead can help keep every member of your family (two-legged and four-legged) safer during an emergency.
