πŸ‘οΈ Is your horse experiencing eye issues?

Don't wait on something as important as your horse's vision. Our clinic regularly welcomes board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists for both outpatient and inpatient referrals β€” bringing specialist-level eye care to the SDEG clinic in San Marcos.

Whether your horse needs a thorough eye examination, advanced diagnostics, or specialized treatment, our ophthalmology team is here to help.

Talk to your doctor when specialized eye care is necessary. Early detection and proper treatment can make all the difference in protecting your horse's sight. 🐴

🐴 Did you know your horse's teeth never stop growing?

Unlike humans, horses have teeth that erupt continuously throughout their lifetime β€” which means regular dental care isn't just a nice-to-have, it's essential.

At San Dieguito Equine Group, our veterinary professionals are specifically credentialed in advanced equine dentistry to give your horse the highest standard of care. Here's why it matters:

🦷 Proper chewing & digestion β€” Uneven or sharp teeth can make it difficult for horses to chew food effectively, directly impacting their nutrition and digestive health.

πŸ’› Overall health & well-being β€” Dental problems left untreated can affect your horse's weight, energy, and quality of life.

🎠 Comfort in the bridle β€” Problems with the teeth and gums can cause significant discomfort when a bit is in place, affecting your horse's performance and behavior under saddle.

Dr Miranda Stripe, SDEG staff veterinarian, is seen below performing a routine dental procedure.

Regular dental exams are one of the most important things you can do for your horse's long-term health. Speak with your doctor about proper dental care.

You know your horse better than anyone. You can feel it in the way they move β€” something just isn't right. But after X-rays, ultrasound, and nerve blocks, you're still without a clear answer.

Here's something many horse owners love to hear: we work collaboratively with your current equine veterinarian to get to the bottom of it.

At San Dieguito Equine, we've been performing Standing MRI procedures for over 20 years. That's two decades of experience, thousands of cases, and a dedicated imaging team that is exceptionally well trained and certified in equine MRI. When your horse steps into our facility, they're in the care of people who have seen it all β€” and who bring genuine expertise and compassion to every scan.

We partner with referring equine vets throughout the southern California region. Your vet refers your horse to us for a Standing MRI, a detailed diagnostic report is provided, and your horse goes right back to the vet you already know and trust for treatment and ongoing care. It's a true team approach β€” and it means your horse gets the best of both worlds.

βœ… 20+ years of Standing MRI experience. We were among the early adopters of this technology and have spent over two decades refining our process. Our imaging staff is experienced, highly trained, and dedicated specifically to equine MRI β€” this isn't a side service, it's what we do.

βœ… A true partnership with your vet. We're an imaging resource for your veterinarian, not a replacement. Many of the most skilled equine vets in our region regularly refer their most challenging lameness cases to us β€” because having the right images changes everything.

βœ… No general anesthesia required. Your horse remains standing and sedated throughout the scan β€” eliminating the risks associated with general anesthesia and making the process far less stressful for your horse.

βœ… Diagnostic in over 90% of lameness cases. Our Hallmarq Standing MRI detects bone inflammation, soft tissue damage, navicular disease, early-onset degenerative joint disease, and subtle lesions that X-rays and ultrasound can miss entirely.

βœ… Full distal limb coverage. We image from the hoof all the way to the carpus or tarsus β€” the regions where most lameness originates.

βœ… iNAV motion correction technology. Hallmarq's iNAV technology corrects for patient movement during scanning, producing clearer, more precise images of the fetlock, pastern, proximal suspensory, and more. Better images = better diagnoses.

βœ… Most horses are seen as day patients. No extended stays. Your horse comes in, gets scanned, and heads home to their regular barn and care team.

βœ… Comprehensive reports go directly to your vet. After the scan, your referring veterinarian receives a full imaging report so they can immediately build a targeted treatment and rehabilitation plan.

If your horse has unexplained lameness, talk to your equine vet about a referral to San Dieguito Equine for a Standing MRI.

Orthopedic consultations with our staff of experienced doctors are available at your doctor’s request.

20+ years of expertise. The gold standard in imaging. A team that truly cares. 🐎❀️

What a fantastic day at San Dieguito Equine! 🐴

Yesterday, we had the privilege of hosting 12 veterinarians for a wet lab focused on Building and Managing a Durable Equine Athlete: From Lameness to Metabolic Health and Beyond.

The day was filled with incredible learning, meaningful networking, and plenty of camaraderie. A huge thank you to our talented presenters, Dr. Matt Durham and Dr. Jeff Hall, for sharing their expertise and making the day so impactful.

We also want to give a heartfelt shoutout to our generous sponsors β€” Platinum Performance, Sound/Antech, and Zoetis β€” whose support made this event possible.

And of course, none of it would have come together without the amazing San Dieguito Equine staff, who kept everything running seamlessly from start to finish. You all are the best! πŸ‘

We look forward to hosting more events like this and continuing to advance the health and performance of equine athletes. Stay tuned!

🐴 What Is a Bone Scan (Nuclear Scintigraphy)? 🐴

When a horse is lame or underperforming and the cause isn’t obvious, a bone scanβ€”also called nuclear scintigraphyβ€”can help us find the problem.

πŸ” How it works:
A small amount of a safe radioactive tracer is injected into the bloodstream. Areas of the body with increased bone activity (often linked to injury or inflammation) absorb more of the tracer and β€œlight up” on special imaging. This allows us to see problem areas that may not show up on X-rays or ultrasound.

🐎 Why it’s helpful:
βœ”οΈ Identifies hard-to-find sources of pain
βœ”οΈ Useful for subtle, multiple, or shifting lameness
βœ”οΈ Helps pinpoint stress injuries, joint disease, and bone inflammation
βœ”οΈ Guides more targeted treatment and rehab plans

Think of it as a whole-body map that highlights where your horse needs attention, helping us move from guessing to knowing β€” and getting your horse back to comfort and performance sooner.

Pictured are San Dieguito Equine Group team members Sanandry Simpson, RVT, and Lupe Barraso performing a bone scan at our clinic following referral from a Southern California equine veterinarian. Bone scan images of AP front feet and dorsal pelvis are also shown.

If you have questions about whether a bone scan is right for your horse, our team is always happy to help!

πŸ”Ž Investigating Irregular Blood Test Results in Horses

When routine bloodwork shows unexpected or abnormal results, additional diagnostics may be needed to determine the underlying cause. In select cases, a bone marrow aspirate can provide critical information about how blood cells are being produced.

Dr. Rebecca James is pictured performing a bone marrow aspirate procedure to evaluate the marrow – the source of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The testing can help clarify causes of:

- Unexplained anemia
- Abnormal white blood cell counts
- Low platelet levels
- Persistent or unexplained changes on CBC results

The procedure is performed under sedation, is generally well tolerated, and can be an important step in developing an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

If your horse has irregular blood test results and ongoing concerns, advanced diagnostics such as bone marrow evaluation may be recommended.

πŸ“ž Contact our office at 760-591-9952 to learn more or to discuss whether this testing is appropriate for your horse.
