⏰ Daylight Savings is the perfect time to check the chip! ⏰

Microchips are an amazing tool for quickly reuniting lost pets with loving families. But each year, countless cats enter shelters with microchips registered to disconnected phone numbers or with out-of-date ownership info. This can delay or even prevent lost pets from returning home 😿

Microchips only work if the registration information is kept up-to-date, so you gotta check! Logging in and updating contact info is a quick task, but it can be easily forgotten. Try pairing your annual chip check with another task you won’t forget, like resetting your clocks in the spring or making it a recurring calendar item. All cats at The Dancing Cat are already microchipped so that upon adoption we can easily get you updated as the registered guardian for your cat(s). Remember to add your cat as a contact in your phone and include their microchip # so no matter where you are this info is easily accessible!

It's time for another cat trivia! Cats typically have five toes on each fore paw and four toes on each hind paw. But did you know that other kitties can have more? Cats with extra toe beans are called "polydactyl" cats and can have as many as nine toes on their front or hind paws! Fear not though as it is a harmless genetic trait that has no adverse effect on their health.

If you want to meet a polydactyl in person, you can meet our adoptable cat Buster Pawsy at the lounge. He has big, mighty thumbs that will have him hitchhiking his way into your heart in no time!

Adjusting to a new home doesn’t happen overnight! The 3/3/3 Rule is a great guideline for what to expect. Every cat is unique but in general, cats need:

*3 days to decompress: The first days in a new home are stressful for kitties. Reduce stress by creating a small “basecamp” in a bathroom, bedroom, or office. This allows cats to safely access food, water, and a litter box without getting overwhelmed by new sights, sounds, and smells.

*3 weeks to learn your routine: After 3 weeks, your cat is in the groove! They can predict your routines, which increases feelings of safety and allows them to get more curious. Keep encouraging them to explore by placing their favorite toys or blankets around the house. Finding familiar smells and objects will reassure your kitty as they expand their territory.

*3 months to feel at home: After a few months, your kitty has gotten the message…they’re home! You’ve established a bond and they’re probably showing off their full personality. Continue to find new ways to bond! Cat training can be a fun way to provide enrichment and build trust with your kitty.

Remember: all good things take time! When you adopt from The Dancing Cat, you can always reach out for advice during this adjustment period. We’re happy to support you and your new companion!

Looking for a companion that will help you explore your surroundings with a new purrspective? Celeste, could be the cat for you. As a spirited explorer, she loves to climb and is always finding the highest perch she can conquer—whether it’s the top shelf in the closet or any other lofty spot she can claim as her own. When she’s not scaling to new heights in her kingdom, she’s chasing toys, watching the world from the window, or joining you in the bathroom for some extra company.

Celeste is playful, affectionate, and thrives on mental stimulation and interaction. She loves being near her people, whether it’s curling up next to you or making biscuits on your lap. She would prefer to be the only pet and would thrive in a home that is full of playtime.

Ready to bring this adventurous, loving, and endlessly entertaining kitty into your life? Celeste is currently in a foster home - if you are interested in getting to know her more, fill out an application on our website and we will be in touch!

With spring on the horizon, can we talk about flowers? Specifically…wallflowers! Some of our favorite cats are wallflowers who can get overlooked due to their bashful nature when meeting new people. These friends need a bit of patience as they adjust, but in return offer a unique and meaningful friendship for those who take time to support them.

Don’t overlook a cat who’s more of an observer! These kitties:

🌸 …can be gentle and sensitive souls. Once trust is built, they can form tight bonds with their favorite person. While they may not become your household greeter at future parties, they’ll definitely be your loyal buddy for years to come.

🌸 …can be a bit more independent! These cats are often perfectly happy with their own company while you’re off at work, and make delightful companions when you arrive home in the evening.

🌸 …still enjoy things like toys, treats, and naps in unexpected places! Like a fine wine, these kitties just need time to breathe and open up before letting you experience the full flavor of their personality. You won’t miss out on all the fun cat stuff, but you will feel extra special when your feline friend feels safe enough to show you their zany side!

This spring, consider picking a wallflower! Your calm, supportive home may be the perfect place for them to finally bloom and let loose on the dance floor of life.

As mentioned earlier, working from home can be all work and no playtime! Dylan had been considering pursuing pet parenthood and was feeling more convinced about adding a lil co-worker after meeting Lyla at The Dancing Cat. She was the right mix of clever, cute, cuddly and curious about him. Within the hour of their visit, she had really warmed up to him in a way that felt meaningful. Lyla was new in the lounge and getting her bearings so the chance encounter and the mutual interest felt like fate. Lyla, it seemed, had a habit of being in the right place at the right time. She was found on the streets by a vet tech we have worked with and through those connections she was brought into our care. Timing was everything for Dylan, Katya, and Lyla as we celebrate adoption #1646

Working from home as the norm seems to have crept up slowly and also in the blink of an eye! What was very rare a decade ago is now incredibly common and one aspect of it that can be challenging is isolation. Sure co-workers can sometimes be tedious or distracting but as days and weeks mount without another being to break up a work day it can leave WFH'ers feeling some type of way. We began seeing an upswing in adoptions when the Covid-19 pandemic began and for many it was driven by the desire for companionship, a universal need to share our life, attention and love with others. We have found homes for hundreds of cats who have at least one human who works from home and we are thrilled to have this folded into the fabric of our adoptions program. Our team is experienced in guiding adopters through the acclimation process (where once there was near silence there is now meowing, zoomies, laptop sitting etc). Routines are shifted and so is sleep, everyone involved is new to the arrangement and learning how to cohabitate. We hear. 'Is this behavior normal? What do they want when they do this? How do I get them to do what I want them to do?' We are here to support, advise and sometimes share a knowing giggle and shrug: Cats! To those who are homebound and contemplating adding a lifelong co-worker into the mix, we are here to talk through the possibilities. Happy hour can have a whole new meaning with a cat bestie!

Cat trivia time! Did you know that cats are one of the sleepiest mammals? They sleep roughly 13 to 16 hours per day, or about two-thirds of their lives. So if you wonder why your kitty sleeps so much, don't worry cause it's purrfectly normal!

P.S. The sleeping cat in the photo is Cindy Lou, one of the adoptable cats in our lounge! You can meet her by booking a visit through www.thedancingcat.org/reservations ♥️

Looking for the perfect sidekick? Marvel is more than just a beautiful calico cat— it's her gentle nature and love for affection that truly make her special. Marvel’s favorite things are simple: she loves getting brushed and being showered with attention. Marvel was a dedicated and loving mom to four kittens. Despite being young herself, she put her heart and energy into raising her little ones, making sure they were cared for and safe. Now that her kittens have grown and are off on their own adventures, Marvel is looking for a chance to receive the love and attention that she so lovingly gave to others.

Marvel may not wear a cape, but she’s got superpowers all her own! Her superpower is her incredible capacity for love. If you’re looking for a sweet, affectionate companion, Marvel’s ready to save the day!

Marvel is currently in a foster home - if you are interested in getting to know her more, head to our website to apply and we can get you set up for an introduction!
