Today we are celebrating 419 adoptions in May 2026!

In one month, 100 dogs, 20 puppies, 39 cats, 252 kittens, and eight other shelter pets went home to their new families. We were especially happy to see some of our long-stay pets finally find their second chance.

Each of these animals left our care for a fresh start and a second chance at life in a loving home. From dogs and puppies to cats and kittens, every adoption represents space opened in the shelter and an opportunity for another animal still waiting.

We are grateful to everyone who adopted, fostered, volunteered, supported, and helped make these outcomes possible. Your partnership directly impacts the lives of animals in our community.

We look forward to continuing this lifesaving work and sharing more adoption successes in the months ahead.

Thinking about adopting? Visit us at 2750 Monterey Rd in San José to meet the animals still looking for homes.

This evening's star is Chimney (ID ) who packed a whole lot of adventure into his foster vacation weekend. From making a new dog bestie at the park to investigating every beach smell like it was his full-time job, this boy showed everyone just how fun, social, and lovable he is.

At the dog park, Chimney played for hours and showed off excellent dog-to-dog manners. He loves a good game of tug, respects other dogs’ boundaries, and knows how to keep the fun going. At the beach, he spent his time chasing seagulls (unsuccessfully), shredding kelp with unmatched enthusiasm, and deciding whether ocean waves are exciting or suspicious.

Back at home, Chimney settled in beautifully. After one accident upon arrival, he stayed clean the rest of the weekend, slept quietly in his crate by night two, and proved he can relax calmly in public spaces. He is treat motivated, knows his sit cue well, walks nicely on leash, and checks in often with his people. Most of all, Chimney loves being close to his humans and soaking up affection wherever he goes.

Like many young dogs, he can still be a little jumpy and mouthy when excited, but he is eager to learn and would thrive with continued training and structure.

Chimney is ready to trade weekend vacations for a furever home. Come meet this sweet, goofy, beach-loving boy at our shelter located at 2750 Monterey Rd. in San José.

Monkey D Doggy’s (ID ) first ever Tails & Trails adventure? Total success!

This confident guy hopped right into the car like a seasoned road trip buddy and headed off for a beautiful day at Shady Oaks Park and the Coyote Creek Trail. Toy in mouth the entire time, Monkey D crushed a five-mile outing like it was no big deal.

Between trail walks, lake views, and plenty of activity around him, Monkey D stayed cool, calm, and completely unbothered. Dogs, cyclists, kids, squirrels… he took it all in stride. But his favorite part of the day? Stretching out in the sunshine with his beloved toy beside him, soaking up every second of the warm weather.

Monkey D Doggy is athletic, friendly, and full of personality. He loves toys (especially ball-like ones), enjoys a good adventure, and is also perfectly happy hanging out and doing his own thing. He is an amazing car rider, a fantastic walking companion, and the kind of dog who makes every outing more fun.

Three words to describe him: Confident. Athletic. Friendly.

Ready to hit the trails with Monkey D Doggy (A1400623)? Come meet him at the San José Animal Care Center, 2750 Monterey Road, San José, CA 📍

Get to know Smudge (ID )!

Four-year-old Smudge is a happy, playful boy who has been at the shelter since January 2026, patiently waiting for his person but he continues to greet each day with a wagging spirit and lots of love to give.

His favorite thing in the world is toys, especially balls. Fetch is where Smudge truly shines and he would happily keep the game going all day if he could. In fact, it is helpful to have at least two balls on hand because Smudge does not believe in unnecessary breaks from playtime. He will even sit politely when asked, especially if he knows a ball might be thrown next.

Smudge enjoys his yard time and is always ready for fun and engagement. Water is not really his preference and he tends to avoid the pool, but he does not let that slow down his enjoyment of outdoor time.

With other dogs, Smudge has shown a relaxed and easygoing attitude. He can coexist near them, has done well in playgroup settings, and tends to focus more on toys and enrichment than anything else.

After a longer stay, Smudge has become quite expressive in his kennel and gets excited and wiggly when people walk by, hoping for attention and a chance to say hello.

Smudge is ready for a home where playtime, connection, and companionship are part of everyday life. Come meet him in person and see his personality shine!

We have a moment we wanted to share!

This week we visited the City of Saratoga, one of the other cities our shelter serves beyond San José, to share some much-needed animal joy with their city employees.

We brought along Bubbles (ID ), a shelter puppy named Lily, and three foster cats for a day full of meet-and-greets, cuddles, and calm connection.

It was a win for everyone:
City staff got a chance to de-stress with some four-legged visitors, and our shelter pets got valuable time outside the shelter to explore new environments, meet new people, and build confidence.

Bubbles, as always, made friends everywhere he went. Lily balanced playful puppy energy with plenty of naps, and the kittens happily soaked up all the attention (then promptly snoozed it off).

Community moments like this help our animals grow, relax, and get one step closer to home.

Happy Feel Good Friday 💛

Kayla (ID ) is still waiting, still amazing, and still thriving in foster care while she looks for her person. This is Kayla’s third Foster Friday feature and she is hoping this is the one that catches the eye of her furever home!

Kayla is a eight-year-old, 65-lb sweetheart who has been in foster since January 2026 and is showing her foster every day just how special she is.

In her foster home setting, Kayla shines. She is calm, affectionate, and incredibly people-focused without being demanding. She is past the puppy chaos, fully house trained, quiet in the home, and happiest when she is close to her humans, whether that is relaxing at your feet, trying to get on your lap, or gently nudging your hand for more pets.

What really sets her apart is how easily she fits into daily life. Walks are easy, distractions don’t rattle her, and she is smart enough to keep learning and growing with every new game, trick, or training session you throw her way.

Kayla doesn’t need a perfect home, just some one to take a chance on her. One that sees her, engages her, and finally gives her the permanence she has been waiting for since August 2025.

If you have been looking for a steady, loving companion who already knows how to be part of a home, Kayla is ready.

To meet her and her foster mom, email [email protected] to set up a meet and greet.

The forecast is in… and it is looking like Sunny (ID ) days ahead! With summer just around the corner, this two-year-old sweetheart is ready to be someone’s daily dose of sunshine.

Sunny recently spent a little over two weeks in foster, and her family was blown away by her smarts. She learned sit, down, stay, wait, look at me, drop it, and leave it in just one session each! She is also got a cute habit of tapping the doorknob with her nose when she wants to go outside. She is smart AND resourceful.

Sunny the kind of dog who can keep up with an active lifestyle and keep you laughing along the way. She is a bit cautious in new spaces at first, taking time to observe and settle in, but once she does, she is calm, cuddly, and loves being close to her people. Sunny enjoys tug of war, walks beautifully on leash, and is polite and attentive, truly a joy to train and be around.

Sunny thrives with patience, love, and a calm home where she can build confidence and shine. While she did well with kids in foster, her playful energy may be best in a home without very young children.

Sunny is back at the shelter now waiting for her furever and here is the sunshine bonus, you can name her adoption fee through May 31, 2026!

Don’t miss your chance to bring home a little sunshine. Come meet her at our shelter located at 2750 Monterey Rd in San José.
