There’s something about the way a paw print stays on your heart long after the goodbye. Every wag, purr and nuzzle writes its own story. Some shelter dogs are getting a break from kennel life.

A Texas shelter has launched a “Doggy Day Out” program that allows community members to take adoptable dogs on short adventures like park trips, hikes or coffee runs. The outings give the pups a chance to relax outside the shelter and experience new environments.

Staff also learn more about each dog’s personality during the trips, which helps them better match the dogs with potential adopters.
