And that goes for behaviors AND MINDSETS!!📣

We all know that we use our pets as praise during training to reinforce and reward good behaviors. That’s great!! They deserve payment for a job well done😇

HOWEVER, your affection also reinforces and rewards states of mind. Here’s some common examples:

- Your dog is barking at other dogs and you pet them to help calm them down. While your intentions are good, in reality you are rewarding the reactivity and teaching them that barking in those moments is good🫣
- Your dog is nervous and you’re petting them to soothe them. You’re unintentionally rewarding the nervousness and ultimately you’ll see more of it😖
- Your dog is overexcited and uncontrollably jumping on people during greetings and those people proceed to pet them. While it may seem harmless, your pup is being paid for their over-excited nature, so they will continue this pattern😕

Next time you go to pet your pup, make sure you are happy with not only their behavior at that moment, but they are ALSO in a state of mind that you want them to spend more time in!😁

In our experience, the real, lasting results from any training program happen best through a lifestyle of leadership🤝

When you think of training more as something you LIVE instead of something you DO, you create daily habits and practices that best support your dogs training, impulse control, and balanced state-of-mind😌

When you consistently and properly leverage the small opportunities for leadership, you will be left with a dog who naturally looks to you for guidance and seeks your leadership, especially in moments of uncertainty🤌🏼

How you live with your dog on a day to day basis is what really determines how well their training sticks. Consistently show them what you expect (and hold them to it), and there won’t be any confusion or frustration!🤩
