68 years ago today, on November 3, 1957, a small stray dog from Moscow was sent into space aboard Sputnik 2—an involuntary su***de mission. Chosen for her gentle nature, Laika became the first animal to orbit Earth 🐶

Equipped with 1 meal & a 7 day oxygen supply, Laika was confined inside a tiny capsule with metal restraints that severely limited her movement. During liftoff, her heart rate tripled & her breathing rate quadrupled. She orbited Earth at least once before a system malfunction caused her capsule to reach fatal temperatures.

The truth—that she suffered & died in agony within hours of launch—was concealed from the public for decades.

Today we remember Laika & all victims of animal testing ❤️‍🩹🐶

Our shelves are running low on blankets, towels, linens, and sheets, and these items make a world of difference to the pets in our care—especially the ones who need comfort the most.

Soft bedding helps provide a sense of safety and warmth to animals who may be recovering from medical procedures, adjusting to shelter life, or just in need of a little extra TLC.
