Did you know that dry eye doesn’t just affect dogs?

While it is most commonly diagnosed in dogs, dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) can occur in other species as well.

In dogs, it is typically caused by immune-mediated destruction of the tear-producing glands, leading to decreased tear production and chronic ocular surface inflammation.

In cats, dry eye is less common and is often associated with chronic feline-herpes virus infections that impact the goblet cells of the conjunctiva, leading to a qualitative tear film deficiency. Topical hyaluronic acid can help provide support to the impacted tear film and give the goblet cells time to regenerate.

In horses, it is very rare but can still occur, and when present it can significantly compromise corneal health if not identified and managed early.

Recognizing how dry eye can present across species helps ensure earlier diagnosis and more effective treatment outcomes.

Have you noticed those annoying red/brown stains near your dog’s eyes? Here are a few simple steps you can take to help reduce them:

➡Keep the eye area trimmed to prevent moisture buildup
➡Use a quality tear stain remover (consistency is key!)
➡Try switching to filtered water

Just remember—removing tear stains takes time, and results won’t happen overnight. Stay consistent and patient for the best outcomes.
