EHV ( Equine Herpesvirus) is a viral infection that can cause respiratory disease, abortions in pregnant mares and a severe neurological disease called EHM (Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy).

The flu/rhino vaccine we recommend to all our equine patients protects against the respiratory form of disease associated with EHV. For our pregnant mares we recommend the pneumabort vaccine at 5, 7 and 9 months gestation to protect against the abortive form. *There is NO vaccine to protect against the neurological form (EHM).

Performance/show horses are at a higher risk due to their exposure to new horses and lowered immunity from stress due to travel and competition.

**Currently there are no reported cases of EHV in the state of NC. The current outbreak is localized to TX, OK, CO and LA at this time.

**If your horse is out of date on their flu/rhino vaccine we recommend you booster them.

This morning we performed an upper airway scope to examine the guttural pouches of a horse. Guttural pouches are large air filled sacs that contain important nerves and vessels (like the carotid artery) and can harbor infections. The scope is passed through their nose and a special probe is used to open the small entrances of the guttural pouches to then allow the scope in. We can then visualize the internal structures and look for evidence of infection and take samples for testing if needed.

An upper airway scope can also help with diagnosing and treating horses with asthma, exercise induced pulmonary hemmorrhage and diagnosing other diseases within the airway.
