Happy National Hummingbird Day! 🌺

These tiny, speedy birds may be small, but they play an important role in our local ecosystem. This is not a penguin. It's a common murre, and they need your help.

Since August, the SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center has rescued 36 common murres. The rescued common murres are emaciated, have poor feather quality, and are hypothermic. Our skilled wildlife rescue staff are providing essential fluids, medication, and specialized nutrition to stabilize these fragile birds.

Common murres are sleek, black-and-white pelagic birds often mistaken for penguins when seen on shore. Because they spend their lives at sea, finding them on a local beach is a clear sign of serious distress.

We need your help. Please donate to help us care for rescued wildlife and contact us if you see a common murre in need of rescue. You can use a a towel or blanket to safely and gently pick up the bird and place it in a well-ventilated box and bring the bird to us. More below ⬇

This baby turkey vulture rescued from the Big Sur wildfires is now safe and recovering at the SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center.

This nestling was found all alone in the middle of closed Highway 1 near Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. He was thin, cold, and smelled strongly of smoke. We believe the 40-50 day old nestling was forced to fledge prematurely when he and his parents fled the heavy smoke and flames from the nearby Timber Fire.

Weighing only 780 grams, about the size of a teddy bear, he has a long way to go to reach a healthy adult size, but with warmth, proper nutrition, and supportive care, our team expects a full recovery.

As first responders during disasters, SPCA Monterey County is actively providing emergency aid for all animals impacted by the Timber and Plaskett fires, including pets, barn animals, and wildlife. We are currently sheltering 14 evacuated pets in addition to this little turkey vulture.
