Axel is showing us what a difference love, attention, and time outside the kennel can make. This roughly one-year-old chocolate Lab is calm and gentle while enjoying a game of fetch with a child—and his short-term foster home is helping everyone learn more about the wonderful dog he is.

Meet Axel

Outside his kennel, Axel is a much different boy. With an activity to enjoy, someone to guide him, and plenty of affection, he can settle in and show his sweet, playful personality. His short-term foster stay is giving Axel a valuable break from shelter life while helping the shelter better understand his needs and all the qualities that will make him a terrific companion.

Would you like to make a meaningful difference for shelter animals? Hitchcock Road Animal Services is hosting a Foster and Volunteer Open House tomorrow, September 6, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., 160 Hitchcock Road, Salinas, CA.

Come learn how you can help:

Foster: Provide a temporary, loving home for an animal while they wait for adoption.
Volunteer: Help care for animals on-site at the Hitchcock Road Animal Services shelter.
Volunteers must be 18 years or older. Whether you can open your home to a foster dog or lend your time at the shelter, your involvement can change an animal’s life—and give dogs like Axel more opportunities to relax, learn, and shine.

Visit the open house tomorrow, and come meet the people and animals who make this work so rewarding.

Allyson is a beautiful 8-month-old German Shepherd mix with a heart as sweet as her smile and a mind ready to learn.

She’s friendly, smart, eager to please, and full of puppy potential. With the right family, Allyson could grow into an incredible lifelong companion.

Pesto is a 6-month-old orange tabby with an urgent request: please give me something to do!

In his kennel, Pesto stretches, reaches, and tries to connect with the volunteer filming him. He’s clearly tired of being busy doing nothing and ready for playtime, attention, and a home where he can be part of the action.

Kat was adopted! After an extraordinary journey of approximately eight months, this wonderful girl has finally left the building and begun her new life.

Thanks to ALL of the staff and volunteers at HRAS; so much love, care, hope, and worry went into helping Kat reach this beautiful moment.

We will miss her deeply, but our hearts are full knowing that Kat is now home. Happy tails, sweet Kat—you were worth the wait.
