CL Love Equine Services CL Love Equine Services LLC is owned and operated by Cindy Love, offering horse training and lessons.

Haven Ridge Equestrian Center has sold it's facility and will be operating only as CL Love Equine Services LLC. I will be concentrating on a few training horses and will travel for lessons within the Eastern OH/Western PA area. My background is very eclectic, including dressage, natural horsemanship, hunter jumper, trail, cattle work, and barrel racing, with an emphasis on relationship and biomechanics to improve overall performance and enjoyment of both horse and rider.

I probably frustrate stallion owners,as it takes me awhile to put offspring to their intended purpose. I’m not going to barrel race a horse until they’re 5, just my personal preference.

I do have to brag on my 3 year old Spymaster Fame gelding though, Spy My Dashing Legz. He is by far the easiest horse I’ve ever started, smart, willing, sensible, athletic (all three gaits and leads on 2nd arena ride), he is a better horse every time I throw a leg over him and he’s not on a very regular riding schedule.

Watch out for him in a couple of years, because he is fast! He loves to have races with his sister in the pasture, and she’s pretty royally bred also.

Just letting Spy My Dashing Legz figure things out, he’s doing well in spite of me, also learning to steer in the bosal. My 2nd time on him, 3rd actual ride total.

I’ve never started a horse that I haven’t been the first one on, as I’m pretty confident in my ability to have them truly ready, but old age is making me chicken. It’s nice to have a great calm and quiet volunteer, thanks Dave. My volunteer is also crazy, so after I ponied Legz on a longer trail ride, he talked me into going out on a short trail ride for the second time he’s even been set on. Started out ponying with rider, ended up free. Spy My Dashing Legz by SPY Master FAME.

I was reading a post today about trouble catching a horse, and there were lots of suggestions around the concept of running them until they decide it’s less work to be caught.

I’ve had a bit of an issue with this for awhile, with no concrete reason, but it came to me today, as I reflected on how useless this method would be with my older thoroughbred mare, more likely to lead to injury than the desired result.

The concept of moving a horses feet, for many different purposes, is still valid, but I believe we need to approach it from a herd leader viewpoint and not that of predator, which is our natural tendency. A herd leader is never going to move a herd members feet to the point of exhaustion, only to get a short point across, exhaustion is counterproductive to the survival of the herd. Keep in mind that the herd stallion is not the leader, his agenda is slightly different. He will protect his herd with his life, but he is not the one in charge of day to day operations.

I’m just leaving this out there for discussion, and to hopefully get a few more people to change their mindset on how they approach things with horses. Check your inner predator at the exit to your home or work.

Yesterday was 1st day with the saddle and bridle, I had a dinner engagement, so we just moved around a bit, heading to the round pen on Wednesday for sure. This young gelding is so smart and confident that everything is super easy right now. I’m sure his confidence will create some challenges in the future, but I’m really looking forward to this journey.

Legz went to 2nd grade today (I know he and the tack are dirty), I will probably work with the saddle a bit tomorrow. I like to take baby steps in order to insure good experiences and understanding.

I tried a thing this morning, ponying two horses. We didn’t push it, but it went pretty well. Legz wants everyone to know how exhausting it was, even though we were gone maybe 15 minutes.

This is what happens the day after you have your actual 2nd birthday, he was considered 2 on January 1, but he was born 2 years ago yesterday. He has had the harness on before, but I didn’t have a pen set up to really make him move. Got a bit feisty when I made him keep going his least favorite direction, but pretty uneventful overall.

A lot of folks have a very strict set of steps in the training process, I like to see what they’ll give me without really being asked, make sure I’ve covered everything I need, and then move on. After the tack session today, I took the harness off and sat on the fence just asking him to yield his shoulder each way, then I waited to see if he would move sideways to the fence, but didn’t really ask. Today I got both sides, leaned over with all my weight, and then just slid down to the ground. I feel really accomplished that he gave me this for both sides, especially since we really haven’t started actual riding training prep until today.

Let’s talk about training for a minute. Western discipline folks think I’m an English trainer, English discipline folks think I’m a Western trainer, even just a games trainer (gasp). The truth is, I’m neither, I am a horse and rider coach, period.

A good position basically starts from a dressage type seat, heel balanced under the shoulder, hips flexible and independent from everything else. We modify this position for the discipline, and even the horse, but everything has to come back to the hips flowing with the horse’s movement, directing but not interfering, not in front of or behind it. Yes, this will also apply to both cutting and jumping, but there is not enough room to fully explain that here.

Horsemanship is not anything that a human will ever be perfect at, some have a definite gift, some of us have spent a lifetime studying and learning, with a goal to be better tomorrow. I love to help others pursue ‘better’, and to continue this journey myself.

I am now offering horse/farm sitting services in the Salem, Ohio surrounding area. I can also offer help getting caught up with chores around the farm. Currently limiting this to within a 15 mile radius of my location.

I have a lifetime of experience training and caring for many kinds of horses as well as dogs, and limited experience with other animals. I am caring, meticulous, efficient and reliable. I can help with many types of chores; if you have a particular need I might be able to help you out, from mowing to painting fence. I cannot offer overnight stays at this time, as I do have my own horses and dog, but I can offer a nighttime check.

Please call for rates.

If you have a horse that could use some training help while I am onsite, I can help with that also, from teaching young horses pre-riding skills, to manners and trailer loading.

Ground training sessions for horses as part of care service, $25 per training session, riding needs on a case by case basis.
