Reading someone else’s post about everything going on in their life and what has to be done in their day, I took a moment to be thankful for my blessings and my simple life.

Sometimes I feel like a bit of an underachiever because I never wanted to spend my whole life working. I choose to make sacrifices in what I have and what I do, so that I don’t have to work all of the time. I don’t eat out much, I don’t get my hair and nails done, I drive an old truck, but I do spend time and money on the things that bring me joy: my horses and other animals, making a neat and tidy property and home, my boyfriend (though I could be better at that).

I did make a goal yesterday to get more dedicated to the training and conditioning of my horses, the extra rainfall this summer has made kind of a muddy mess and has helped make me unmotivated. I’m retired from training for the public, but there are still things I would like to accomplish, so after dinner last night I went back out and did some work with my 4 year old. My boyfriend should be here today, so I can get some videos to share with you all. At my age, a bit of exercise after dinner seems like it is going to be quite beneficial, it might be a good habit at any age.

Side note, the guinea fowl integration is going quite well, I think they might get in some tussles if they shared a coop at night, but mostly they’re getting along.

I joined in a conversation today about making a living in the horse business, and it really just highlighted how a lot of folks still operate on a model with a lot of risk and minimal return.

Of course, Parelli, Lyons, Anderson, and probably a few others opened the door to a model with a lot of profit potential, and many people have adopted/modified those models, but there are still a lot of folks out there boarding, raising, and training horses for the public on a shoestring budget.

I am thankful every day that I spent enough time in other industries to have a retirement that did not have to he generated from the horse industry, but I was never fond of the idea that some people had of, ‘you can’t make money in this business, it’s a labor of love’. Bullcrap, nobody in the horse industry should be working at a loss to help support other people’s hobbies. There, I said it.

I sometimes work at a big show barn cleaning stalls, I try not to do it too much, but I am reliable, so it does happen. I always think of different things with horses when I’m doing this job, I’m pretty good at it, so there is a lot of time to think. Today there was a new young horse, saddled and tied in the stall getting ready for it’s work time, and I thought as I worked around it how much people miss of what horses are telling them and that’s how they run into a lot of issues. This horse was a bit sensitive as I asked it to move around, so I could clean around it, and I could see how if you weren’t paying attention you could send this horse into a little blowup, just asking it to move around in the stall with a saddle. This is where people run into a lot of issues with horses, not reading and adjusting for where the horse’s mindset is. I safely worked around this horse, gave it some pets where it seemed to be particularly sensitive, and you could visibly see a change in its expression when it realized that I was not an enemy. I see lots of posts of horses supposedly blowing up or refusing something out of nowhere, and I think there were probably so many signs that were not noticed prior to this. It is something I’m wanting to work on, creating a little horsemanship school so that more people can learn about how to read a horse, super basic stuff that gets skipped in some programs. It’s still just in the processes of my mind right now, as I’m finishing up the remodel on my house and actually thinking of moving someplace warmer. It’s just on the back burner, but I see such a necessity for this.

I always said that my jumping horses, even hunters, got better at their regular job when I did Barrel exercises with them, and my Barrel horses got better at that job when I did jumping exercises with them. I wonder if my heeler dog will get better at cattle work when I do bird dog exercises with her.
