Rat fun fact: Did you know that both wild and domestic rats belong to the same species, Rattus norvegicus (the brown or Norway rat)?

Rats have been bred domestically for over 600 years!

Imperial paintings from the Ming Dynasty in China depict domesticated brown rats with varied coat colors, predating other records by more than two centuries.

The next earliest documented evidence comes from 1603 AD in Japan during the Edo period, where rats were kept as pets and later bred for specific traits.

In Europe, rat keeping became fashionable during the Victorian era (19th century), initially popularized by ratcatchers who bred tamed rats for display and companionship.

In 1983 the American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association originated. Since that time rats have been imported from England so that the U.S. now has all the varieties available overseas. Fanciers in the U.S. have also been responsible for originating a number of their own varieties.

Look at all the babies we have! Ferretton's lady had her litter, so we had to showcase the others as well, including a growth update.
Who do you think makes the prettiest babies?

It was a wonderful day to work on the garden today with a little helper. He liked walking in the dirt. Seeds uprooted: 0%. Fun in the sun: 100%. Plus a raspberry as a treat.

Hello everyone! I wanted to kick off this week with a massive thank you to everyone who came to see us at Springfield on Saturday. For those who didn't get to meet one of our ambassador males, this gorgeous odd-eye fawn is Sir Rune Farretton. He has two females right now, one who's litter is about three weeks old. The other gal is about to have her litter any day, and unfortunately, they do not have names! So drop some suggestions in the comments!

Huge thank you again, and make sure to come see us at the Ohio reptiles and more expo on June 27-28th to meet another one of our ambassador males!
