Plains, Montana Show, Big Win

It was such a joy to witness Christine Ann Sikes win Best In Show at Plains, Montana Saturday with her beautiful junior black otter doe.
We hung out to watch the results and I am so grateful we did.

Even just as exciting, after the show I asked Christine who she bought the doe from. I thought it was a new one she brought it.
Nope. Blacktail's Rabbitry Houdini is offspring of Bella Rose Lepus & Bella Rose Juniper. I love news like that!

Well done and congratulations Christine and Houdini!

Another Show In The Books

This show was in Plains, Montana. About a three hour drive one way. We opted to get a hotel and enter the two Open Shows on Saturday and the one Open Show on Sunday.

Saturday was wonderful, with a few hiccups. Approximately 65 Rex were entered and many classes met the 5/3 requirement to earn ARBA legs. Most in our wonderful group of Rex breeders cheered each other on. I was so thrilled to witness a dear friend earn Best In Show with her Rex rabbit! A great ending to the day.
We considered going home Saturday night but I was exhausted and the hotel was paid for.

Sunday's show was not for me. The rabbits had enough after two nights in a carrier cage. About half of the Rex rabbits did not get entered for Sunday as their owner's were smarter than me and went home Saturday night. 😂
I don't know if we will do a two day show again. I won't say never. That is a bad word in the rabbit world. 🤣

How did they do? Well, I am glad you asked! I entered 7 Rex for all 3 shows. They did great. These results are only for the rabbits that earned an ARBA leg.

There was a lot of 1st, BOV and BOSV but none met the 5/3.
Only one class met the 5/3 on Sunday and none of my seven were in that class. Yep, I should have gone home. Actually, I talked with a couple of judges on the side and got some really good feedback. So that was great.

Oakley and Rewdy now qualify for Grand Champion. I am not certain about Rewby since we have yet to receive the Ritzville Exhibitor Reports.
With just seven rabbits at Plains, I was able to take good notes of their placings. Another lesson learned!

The rabbits were all out of poses by the time I took their pictures.

Failure To Thrive

Bertha is an amazing 12 pound Rex mama. She successfully raised 14 kits her very first litter. Litter two she successfully raised all 10. She kindled her third litter of 12 last week.

Most are fat and sassy but there's a couple of skinny ones. Tuesday I pulled the five biggest and shelved them so the others could get full bellies. When I added them back in the next day they all had full bellies but one. When I saw this little one, my heart sank. It was still skinny.

Reality was that it would most likely not make it. I checked this morning and the poor thing was even skinnier so I had to mercy cull it.

There could be a lot of reasons why a kit doesn't thrive. It is just a part of raising rabbits that happens.

My beautiful Bertha went from a 100% kit survival rate to a 97.22% survival rate.

Another great mama in the barn is my 10 pound Hershey. She has kindled 57 babies in 8 litters with a survival rate of 96.49%. That is only 2 babies lost.

Way to go Hershey and Bertha!
