Missouri is inhabited by numerous animals that remain active throughout the year by adapting their behaviors, including deer, coyotes, foxes, squirrels, opossums, raccoons, skunks, beavers, multiple bird species (like chickadees), armadillos, and fish, whereas others, such as frogs, snakes, and turtles, enter a dormant state through torpor rather than true hibernation. Animals that stay active focus on finding food sources, storing fat reserves, or seeking shelter, while others, such as Mourning Cloak Butterflies, survive by employing natural antifreeze and hiding.
