For generations, the veterinarians and staff at Sac Veterinary Clinic have had the privilege of caring for the animals that support and enrich life in our community. From the livestock that sustain family farms to the pets that are cherished members of our homes, this clinic has grown alongside Sac County throughout the years.
Formerly known as Animal Health Center, the practice was founded by Dr. Dave Striegel in 1981, who began serving the area out of his home in Lytton, Iowa. As the clinic grew, Dr. Don Nadrchal joined the practice in 1985, and the two doctors became partners, working side by side to meet the needs of a growing rural community. In 1990, they moved to their new location in Sac City where we still operate out of today.
Through decades of dedication, Dr. Striegel and Dr. Nadrchal built a firm foundation rooted in dependable, compassionate veterinary care. We are deeply grateful for their years of service, mentorship, and the lasting contributions they have made to our community. We are also pleased to share that both doctors will continue practicing part-time, remaining familiar and trusted faces for clients and patients alike.
As of January 2026, ownership of the clinic transitioned to two local veterinarians who are proud to call this community home. Dr. Amberly Van Hulzen, an East Sac County graduate who grew up near Auburn, Iowa, has served as an associate veterinarian at Animal Health Center since 2023. Dr. Kurt Van Hulzen began his veterinary career at Animal Health Center in 1992 with Drs. Striegel and Nadrchal. He has called Sac County home for more than 30 years and is excited to be back where he started. The father/daughter-in-law team looks forward to building on the foundation laid by Dr. Striegel and Dr. Nadrchal.
While ownership has changed, the heart of the clinic has not. Our goal is to continue preserving the values, relationships, and standard of care our clients expect while also investing thoughtfully in the future of the practice. Veterinary medicine is built on trust, communication, and long-standing relationships, and we take that responsibility seriously.
We are honored to carry forward the legacy of Animal Health Center under our new identity as Sac Veterinary Clinic, and are sincerely grateful for the support we have received during this transition. Thank you for trusting us with the care of your animals and for being part of the ongoing story of this clinic.
With appreciation,
Dr. Amberly Van Hulzen, DVM
