☀️🐾 LABOR DAY WEEKEND PET SAFETY🐾☀️

Labor Day weekend is here, and it looks like we’re in for a HOT one! 🥵☀️ Whether you’re spending the weekend outside, traveling, camping, or just enjoying some time at home, don’t forget about your four-legged family members!

🐶🐱 Keep your pets safe in the heat:
💧 Make sure they have access to plenty of fresh, cool water at all times.
🏠 Bring pets inside or into a cool, shaded area when temperatures rise.
🚫 Avoid exercising or taking long walks during the hottest parts of the day.
🐾 Remember that hot pavement can burn paw pads — if the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws!
🚗 NEVER leave your pet in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes. Temperatures inside a vehicle can become dangerously hot very quickly.
🌡️ Keep a close eye on pets who are more vulnerable to heat, including flat-faced breeds, puppies/kittens, senior pets, overweight pets, and those with underlying health conditions.

⚠️ Know the signs of heat exhaustion/heatstroke: excessive or heavy panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, stumbling, collapse, or seizures can all be signs of a serious heat-related emergency.

If you suspect your pet is experiencing heatstroke, move them to a cool area and seek veterinary care immediately. Heatstroke can become life-threatening very quickly.

☀️ Summer Heat Can Be Dangerous for Your Pets

As temperatures rise and humidity increases, so does the risk of heat stroke in our furry family members.

What is heat stroke?
Heat stroke occurs when a pet's body can no longer cool itself down, causing its body temperature to rise to dangerous levels.
Did you know? Dogs and cats don't sweat like we do. Instead, they rely primarily on panting to regulate their body temperature, making hot and humid weather especially dangerous.

Common causes of heat stroke include:
• Being left in a parked vehicle.
• Spending time outdoors without adequate shade or fresh water.
• Long walks, runs, or playing fetch during the hottest part of the day.

⚠️ Heat stroke is a life-threatening medical emergency.
It can affect multiple organ systems, including the kidneys, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, muscles, nervous system (including the brain), and blood clotting system. Some complications may not become apparent until 48–72 hours after the initial incident.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heat stroke:
• Seek veterinary care immediately.
• Move your pet to a cool, shaded area.
• Begin cooling them with cool water and use a fan if available.
• While transporting your pet, run the vehicle's air conditioning to help continue cooling.

Prevention is the best treatment.
✔️ Keep pets indoors during extremely hot and humid weather whenever possible.
✔️ Always provide access to fresh, cool water.
✔️ Make sure outdoor pets have adequate shade.
✔️ Walk and exercise pets during the cooler morning or evening hours.
✔️ Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle or other enclosed space, even for a few minutes.
❤️ A little prevention goes a long way. Taking a few simple precautions can help keep your furry family members safe, healthy, and comfortable all summer long.

We are incredibly thankful to everyone who reached out, shared their story, and was interested in giving Lucy & Ethel a loving home. It means so much to us to see these two get to continue their lives side-by-side! 🏡💕

If you’re still looking to add a beautiful little kitten (or two 😉) to your family, we highly encourage you to check out your local animal shelter or rescue! There are so many wonderful kittens waiting for their furever families, and shelters are often overflowing with babies in need of loving homes. 🐾❤️
