We understand that seeing animals surrendered to a shelter can bring up strong emotions. We love these dogs too, and we know these comments are coming from a place of concern for them. However, we want to remind everyone that responsibly surrendering an animal to a shelter is very different from abandoning an animal.
We may not always know—or share—the circumstances that led someone to surrender their pet. Financial hardship, housing changes, illness, family emergencies, safety concerns, behavioral challenges, or countless other situations can leave someone facing a decision they never expected to make.
When an owner contacts a shelter and goes through the proper surrender process, they are making sure their dog is left somewhere safe, provided food and shelter, evaluated, cared for, and given an opportunity to find another home. That is a far better outcome than leaving a dog on the side of a road, dumping them in the country, abandoning them in an empty home, or simply letting them loose.
This is why comments suggesting that people who surrender their animals are terrible, irresponsible, or should never own another pet can have unintended consequences. If people believe they will be publicly shamed for asking a shelter for help, they may become afraid to ask for help at all. And ultimately, the animals are the ones who can suffer because of it.
We would much rather have someone call us and say, “I can no longer care for my dog. What can I do?” than have that dog abandoned somewhere with no food, water, protection, or way for us to know their history.
Surrendering an animal is not always the choice we wish had to be made, and certainly there are situations that frustrate us too. But our role as a shelter is not to publicly judge every person who walks through our doors. Our job is to keep animals safe and encourage our community to use responsible resources when they need help.
So while we absolutely welcome compassion for these dogs, we ask that the compassion extend to the way we discuss owner surrenders as well. Please help us create a community where people feel safe reaching out before an animal is abandoned.
If the choice is between surrendering a dog safely to a shelter or dumping that dog somewhere—we will choose the safe surrender every single time. ❤️

What we know: Kammanche, Kamm for short is a very sweet dog. Still just a puppy and has lots of the puppy energy. Trying to get him to stand on the scale was a chore. He is a big love bug and wants all your attention. He plays great with other dogs here at the shelter. He loves puppy treats. He needs a family that will give him attention and spend time with him, so he won’t want to dig a hole under the fence and end up back at the shelter.
