Luke’s Hidden Haven, a no kill animal and wildlife sanctuary. Many of Luke’s Hidden Haven’s wonderful sponsors, donors, volunteers, and supporters have contacted us extremely concerned over the negative posting on Facebook by a former volunteer at Luke’s who is no longer permitted access to our sanctuary. We recognize that the comments are untrue, libelous, unfounded, vindictive, and an unsubstantiated attack on a registered charity - registered and inspected by the state. Because of this negative post, we decided that we would like to summarize the impact Luke’s Hidden Haven has had and continues to make on the surrounding communities as they struggle with the many crises arising from animal ownership. Many of you know this story but we hope that we will reach some of the people who do not have any idea.
Luke’s Hidden Haven is not a shelter. It is a sanctuary. We are privately owned and supported by the community and people throughout the USA, Canada, and overseas in Europe and the Middle East. Every supporter automatically becomes a member of the Luke’s Hidden Haven family and is treated accordingly.
We have good shelters in Bradford County. They match dogs for adoption with loving families, help with strays, and many serious dog issues. We work together with them in many aspects.
However, our mission at Luke’s is very different. We support bereaved, abandoned, and abused dogs in the surrounding communities. Our facility is in Rome, Pennsylvania. We provide lifetime care, hospice, and end of life comfort. We also help with emergency veterinary care to prevent euthanasia. We care for dogs, whose owners temporarily cannot care for them due to going into the hospital, losing their home, or going to jail or any other circumstances. Our team of care givers are trained and first class. They share a love for animals, understand their needs, and exhibit a high level of dedication to Luke’s Hidden Haven. We have programs that help struggling pet owners with food and veterinary care so they can keep their pets. We spay and neuter, run a food bank, and have rehab programs for abused dogs. We have no administrative salaries. We are a volunteer organization. Every dime we raise goes directly to the animals. We have to raise $300,000 a year to provide this community service. We have fundraisers - raffle baskets, bingo, sponsored dining programs - too many to list. We are not eligible for most grants as we are not an adoption focused shelter. We currently have 65 dogs all needing our help. They cannot help themselves. They need Luke’s and the support of our surrounding communities. It is a partnership 24 years in the making in Rome, PA and we bless our Luke’s Hidden Haven family.
A brief comment also needs to be made about our founder and CEO, Maunallen Gregory from England. A former international executive, she has spent sixty years helping animals throughout the world. At 91 years old, she works long hours, shepherding the organization in a changing world with some equally inspired help from unpaid volunteers who are retired and bring their expertise to Luke’s. We are fortunate in so many ways.
Many of you who will read this have your own stories to tell how Luke’s Hidden Haven has come into your life. We welcome your thoughts, memories, and stories. Please share them with us. Bless you all and let’s keep going and doing what we do!
