Help your pets stay safe this 4th of July by:

The New World screwworm fly had been eradicated in the U.S., but has recently resurfaced. ๐Ÿชฐ

With multiple confirmed cases in South Texas, here's what you need to know about the emerging threat:

๐Ÿฉน Unlike most fly larvae, New World screwworm maggots feed on living tissue, causing severe wounds and tissue destruction that could lead to death if left untreated.

๐Ÿ„ The parasite can infect any warm-blooded animal but is more common in cattle, swine, horses, small ruminants and dogs.

๐Ÿ”Ž Even small wounds can put animals at risk. Pet and livestock owners should watch for warning signs like maggots, foul-smelling wounds, swelling, pain, avoiding food and water and withdrawing from the herd or other animals.
