🌳 Growing fruit. Growing connections. Growing what’s possible for Rochester.
Recently, our Garden Support Coordinator visited Kansas City through our partnership with The Giving Grove - and came back inspired! 🍐

They saw how another city is bringing communities together in ways that mirror our own work.

From Steph: "It was amazing to learn how different orchards in Kansas City integrate similar programs as we do! I got to visit a youth employment farm, a school orchard, a church orchard, and multiple community gardens stewarded by so many people who are dedicated to growing fruit for their communities in KC.

Thanks to Matt and Ashley at The Giving Grove for making this happen! And Rochester, get ready - Asian pears, jujubes, paw paws, apples, and cherries could be part of your community orchard future."

The seeds (or perhaps grafts 😊) of something good are already taking root in Rochester! Thurgood Marshall Middle School just planted their orchard. 🌱

Congratulations! You’ve won our Fall Garden Materials Giveaway raffle! We hope your new garden goodies help your community garden grow and thrive. 🌷

Rochester, thank you so much for a smooth and successful Fall Giveaway!

We gave away $12,000 of materials to 80 gardens on the night of the event with a few more picking up this week.

That means 80 gardens got into the raffle for the extra bulbs and elevated raised bed- but only Lyell Library Community Garden won!

Gardeners, our second community garden materials giveaway is THIS FRIDAY from 5-7 PM at the Public Market. Every registered community garden that collects its materials on the 23rd will be automatically entered into a raffle!

HOT TIPS:
Use the Union St. Public Market entrance & follow the signs.
Ensure there is room in your vehicle for the supplies, including a straw bale.
Know the community garden name that was registered.
Do you know how many people your garden serves? We would love to know and will ask when you check-in!

🌸Growing knowledge. Sharing skills. Bringing new ideas home to Rochester.
Did you know that Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) has a NEW Community Garden Leadership Course? Our Garden Support Coordinator recently graduated from the inaugural cohort!

They traveled to Poughkeepsie for the Resilient Gardens Conference, and came back with plenty to share! From exploring Vassar Community Gardens and Poughkeepsie Farm Project to connecting with urban farmers from across New York State, it was a chance to see how other communities are growing food and tackling similar challenges. (And those dahlias at Vassar? Award-winning! 🌸)

Some favorite takeaways? Finding smarter ways to turn food scraps into healthy soil, navigating tough conversations in community gardens, and preserving the harvest to enjoy through winter.

With three other Rochester garden representatives there too, it was a great opportunity to learn from one another and bring fresh ideas back to our local gardening community.
