Every year at this time the same argument circulates through farming social media: “Does test weight matter?”. I think the question should be “Do bushels matter?”.

A bushel is a measurement of volume. Test weight is how much your bushel actually weighs, as a result of the plant successfully moving nutrients into the seed.

Across scales when you deliver grain, your load is weighed and tested for moisture and test weight. Nobody at the elevator measures volume.

Grain is priced off of bushels, and the established standard for what a bushel of #2 yellow corn is supposed to weigh is 56 lbs. Many growers see 56 lbs as a “go/no-go” number, you either make 56 lbs or your load gets docked for not making it. What many miss is that you incidentally get paid a premium if you beat that number.

Here is the real reason test weight matters: The elevator takes the weight of your delivered grain and simply divides it by 56 to determine how many “bushels” you delivered.

Let’s use 200 bushels per acre to determine how this adds up.

200 bushels of 56 lb corn weighs 11,200 lbs.
200 bushels of 60 lb corn weighs 12,000 lbs.

For simple math let’s say that your local price is $5 per “bushel” (56 lbs).

Gross revenue per acre for the 200 bushel 56 lb farmer is $1000

Gross revenue per acre for the 200 bushel 60 lb farmer is $1071.43.

Over 100 acres that’s a revenue increase of $7143.00. I think the math shows that test weight matters.

Test weight pays bills. Bushels only look cool on a yield monitor and at the coffee shop.

How did Pioneer® soybeans stack up this fall? We pulled every 2026 Minnesota strip plot we could vet and compared each bean only to competitive beans within ±0.2 RM in the same plot. That means same field, same maturity, side by side.

Across 187 head-to-head comparisons in 32 plots, Pioneer came out +4.8 bu/ac ahead (~$58/ac) and won 86% of the time.
