Halloween is Saturday, and it's one of the worst nights of the year for lost dogs. Here's my best advice, from years of finding them:

1. Put your dog in a back room BEFORE the trick-or-treaters start. Every door opening is a chance to bolt, and a scared dog in a crowd of costumes doesn't come back when you call.

2. If you do take them out, leash them, and hold that leash tight. No retractable leashes in a crowd. A firework, a scream, a kid in a mask — that's all it takes.

3. No candy, ever. Chocolate is toxic, and anything with xylitol can kill a dog fast. Keep the bowl up high, and pick up anything that hits the floor.

4. Skip the costume if your dog hates it. A stressed dog is a flight-risk dog. If they freeze, pant, or try to shake it off, take it off.

5. Check the chip and the tags TODAY, not after they're gone. Make sure the phone number on them is current.

6. Cats stay inside Saturday night, period. No exceptions.

If your dog does get out, don't chase them. Get down low, stay calm, and call me — and call before you post it everywhere. The crowd is what pushes them further away.
