At Bayhill Equine, sports medicine is our primary focus, so we receive a lot of questions about joint injections - especially orthobiologic therapies such as Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), IRAP, Pro-Stride, and Alpha-2 Macroglobulin (A*M).

After examining the horse, our doctors determine which treatment option may be most beneficial for that individual patient. The post below outlines the typical steps involved in an orthobiologic injection procedure performed in the field!

Summer is almost here! ☀️ A friendly reminder to our clients that we are currently booking 2–3 weeks in advance for routine appointments, and May is nearly fully booked. If your horse is due for wellness care, vaccines, dentals, lameness evaluations, or other non-emergent services, we encourage scheduling ahead to reserve your preferred timing.

Please contact our office at (650) 851-2300 with any appointment needs. We appreciate your patience and continued trust in our team!

At Bayhill Equine, we love collaborating with equine professionals who share a thoughtful, detailed approach to patient care. Farrier Mike Hayward and Dr. Julia Peterson have been working closely together on this challenging hoof case, combining experience, diagnostics, and innovative tools to help support this horse’s comfort and recovery.

One of those tools was thermal imaging, which helps visualize areas of increased heat and circulation within the hoof. In horses with chronic hoof issues, monitoring these patterns can provide valuable insight alongside radiographs and physical evaluation. In this case, the imaging showed increased temperature on the weight-bearing side of the hoof compared to the offloaded side, helping guide the trim and overall care plan along with x-rays.

We’re incredibly grateful for the collaborative relationships we have with talented local farriers. Thank you, Mike and Dr. Julia!

This past week Dr. Alicia Yocom’s “Woody” found success at the show at ! This was Woody’s first go at jumper shows and we are all so proud of him! Congratulations are in order for Dr. Yocom as well, successfully managing to produce such a lovely horse while also supporting many more at the show series the past weeks. We are lucky to have her as part of the team! 🦄 ❤️

USEF Rule GR1011.10 became effective December 1, 2025! This means at all USEF competitions horses need a fifteen-digit ISO compliant 11784/11785 microchip number that verifies the animal. These chips must be in the nuchal ligament and implanted 12 hours prior to the horse competing in accordance with GR414.
As a reminder, if they are not part of the USEF Federation Licensed or Endorsed competition, they are not required to have a microchip (Starter, Grasshopper, etc.).
