🐴 Horse Care Tips Tuesday: Quarantine Matters! 🐴

Whenever a new horse arrives at the ranch, one of the most important things we can do is give them a little space before introducing them to the rest of the herd. ❤️

That means quarantine! 🩺

Quarantining new arrivals helps protect the horses already in our care by giving us time to monitor for any signs of illness or contagious conditions before they share space, water, equipment, or pasture with the herd. It also gives our veterinary team time to complete any necessary testing and establish a baseline for each horse.

But quarantine isn’t just about protecting the herd—it also gives the new horse time to decompress. Moving to a new place can be overwhelming, and we want to give every horse the time and space they need to settle in, feel safe, and show us who they really are.

And speaking of new arrivals… 👀

We’ve recently welcomed two new horses to Happy Trails after their owner, a wonderful woman whose health is failing, made the incredibly difficult decision to find them a new home. We are honored to give these two a safe place to land. ❤️

They’re currently enjoying their quarantine period while we learn more about their health, history, and—most importantly—their personalities. We can’t wait to introduce them to you soon!

🌿 Social Saturday: Welcome to the Herd, Clover! 🐴💚

Over the past few weeks, Clover has made some incredible progress! Now that she is gaining trust in humans, this sweet girl officially left quarantine and moved into the normal quarters with the rest of the herd. 🎉

Quarantine is an important part of rescue life—it gives new arrivals time to decompress, receive any needed medical care, and helps ensure everyone stays healthy before introductions. But Clover’s progress has gone far beyond simply joining the herd: she is now eating from a bowl while it’s held by a person! That may seem like a small step, but for Clover, it’s a huge milestone. 🥹💕

Clover is settling into the herd life she deserves—with fresh grass, new friends, and plenty of room to just be a horse. 🌱

Welcome to the herd, Clover! We’re so proud of how far you’ve come and so happy you’re here. 🥰🐴

🐴 Horse Care Tips Tuesday: LOCK THOSE GATES! 🔒

Everyone in this community knows that horses are incredibly intelligent… but did you know some of them—like Lex—can also turn into escape artists? 😂

Lex has mastered the art of opening gates, which is a great reminder that you should never underestimate our hooved friends! 🐴

When it comes to horse safety, make sure your gates:
🔒 Are securely latched
🔒 Have locks that require opposable thumbs to operate
🔒 Are checked every time you enter or leave
🔒 Aren’t relying on a clever horse to promise they won’t figure it out 😉

Because if there’s a gate that can be opened, there’s probably a horse out there determined to prove it. And Lex is happy to volunteer. 😂

Keep those gates locked, friends! Our horses may be sweet, but they’re also clever 💚

Supporter Sunday 🍷🐴

This Supporter Sunday, we’re raising a glass to Beyond The Vine 🥂

Thanks to their incredible partnership, more than $500 was raised for Happy Trails Horse Rescue — that’s hundreds of glasses of wine enjoyed for a very good cause! 🍷🐴❤️

And the best part? These funds go directly toward caring for the horses — helping provide the hay, veterinary care, farrier services, medications, training, and everyday essentials our herd needs to thrive. Every glass truly makes a difference!

We’re so grateful to local businesses who choose to support rescue and help us give horses the care, rehabilitation, and second chances they deserve.

💚 Thankful Thursday 💚

Today, we’re especially grateful for the amazing trainers who help make happy endings possible for horses like Sandee. 🐴

One of the reasons we’ve been able to successfully adopt out 14 horses since 2024 is because we don’t do it alone. We work with incredible trainers—both onsite and through boarding—to give each horse the time, training, and support they need to be truly ready for their next chapter.

That might mean preparing a horse to confidently hit the trail, developing the skills to enjoy arena work, or sometimes helping us discover that a horse is happiest as a beloved companion and professional snuggle buddy. ❤️

Sandee has been quite the project! She was initially terrified of cantering, even nearly going through the arena panels during her first attempt. But with patience, consistency, and a trainer she trusts, she recently got her first successful canter! 🎉

Her trainer says she is becoming increasingly trusting and responsive, although she’s still very much Sandee. 😂 She’s continuing to work on trail riding and cantering so that when she finds her person, she’ll be as prepared as possible.

That’s what responsible adoption looks like to us: not just finding a horse a home, but preparing the horse and adopter for success together.

We are incredibly thankful for the trainers who pour their time, expertise, patience, and heart into these horses. They are such an important part of our rescue village—and we couldn’t do this work without them. 💚

✨ Wednesday Wishes: Kody’s Wish Came True! ✨

Some wishes are worth waiting for—and Kody’s wish for the perfect forever home has absolutely come true. ❤️🐴

Kody is thriving with his new family and his best buddy, Lil Bit (LB)! His adopter tells us he spends his days playing, exploring obstacles and toys, and getting plenty of free exercise with his favorite companion. 😂 They’ve even added fitted Renegade trail boots to keep his adventures comfortable!

And Kody is proving what a special guy he is—he recently gave his adopter’s friend her very first horse ride and was an absolute gentleman. 🥹 His new friends adore him, and his adopter says she is “very proud of him and very, very happy with him.”

THIS is what we hope for every horse who comes through Happy Trails: a safe, loving home where they can be themselves, make friends, have adventures, and be deeply loved. 💕

🐴 Horse Care Tips Tuesday! 🐴

Vet and farrier days can be a little hectic at the rescue—but having the right equipment makes a HUGE difference!

One of the most valuable tools we have at Happy Trails is our horse-specific squeeze chute. It gives our team a safe, secure space to work with horses who may be nervous, unfamiliar with handling, or simply need a little extra support during veterinary and farrier care.

The chute helps minimize movement while still allowing our horses to feel supported, making things like exams, vaccinations, blood draws, hoof care, and other treatments much safer and easier for everyone involved. ❤️

For a rescue with horses of all different backgrounds and handling experiences, having equipment designed specifically for horses is an incredible asset. It helps our veterinary and farrier teams do their jobs safely—and helps our horses receive the care they need with less stress.

Good equipment + experienced professionals + patience = safer care for everyone! 🐴💚

Thankful Thursday 💛🐴

Some days in rescue are heavy. There are hard decisions, heartbreaking stories, and moments that test us in ways we never expect. This work isn’t always easy—and it’s rarely simple.

But then we look out across the pasture.

We see horses who are safe. Horses who are healing. Horses who now get to spend their days grazing on fresh grass, soaking up the sunshine, and just being horses. And in those quiet moments, everything feels worth it.

We are so incredibly thankful for this view—for the chance to witness these animals find peace, comfort, and joy again.

And we’re thankful for all of you who make it possible. 💚

🐴 Meet the Herd Monday: Mac (“Jack Flash”) ❤️

Meet Mac, our handsome 15-year-old chestnut Thoroughbred gelding and one of our beloved sanctuary horses.

Mac came to Happy Trails after being listed for free on Craigslist, and it quickly became clear he needed far more care than his previous owners could provide. Since then, he’s overcome painful hoof issues, gained much-needed weight, and received treatment for Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM), a neurological disease.

Today, Mac is part of our hospice program after being diagnosed with a degenerative hoof condition. Our goal is simple: keep him comfortable, happy, and loved for every day he has with us. He receives regular farrier care, laser therapy (one of his favorite spa treatments!), pain management, and all the attention he could ask for.

Despite everything he’s faced, Mac still loves to gallop around the pasture like the racehorse he once was—earning the nickname “Jack Flash.” He’s a gentle soul with a big heart, and we’re honored to give him the care he deserves.

💕Thankful Thursday 💕

Today, we’re feeling especially grateful for every family that has opened their hearts and homes to a rescue horse.

Watching a horse leave for their forever home is one of the greatest joys in rescue. It means another horse gets a second chance, another family gains an incredible companion, and another stall opens for a horse still waiting for help.

Looking back at the past few years reminds us just how much is possible because of this amazing community:

🐴 2024: 2 horses found their forever homes.
🐴 2025: 4 horses were adopted.
🐴 2026: And this year, 8 horses have already found their happily ever after!

That’s 15 horses whose lives have been forever changed because adopters chose rescue.

To every adopter, volunteer, donor, foster, and supporter who has helped make these success stories possible—thank you. Every horse that leaves our gates for a loving home is a reminder of why we do what we do.

Here’s to many more happy endings. ❤️🐴
