A growl isn't a behavior we need to silence. It's communication we need to understand.

When a dog growls, they're giving us information about how they're experiencing a situation.

Punishing the growl might stop the warning, but it doesn't necessarily change what's happening underneath.

Instead of focusing on stopping the behavior, we can get curious about what's causing it and how we can help.

That's where connection begins. ❤️

🐾 Your dog isn’t always misbehaving. Sometimes they’re just being a dog.

Digging holes? Rolling in something disgusting? Shredding cardboard? Stopping to sniff the same spot for five minutes?

Sounds like a dog being a dog to me! 🐕

Somewhere along the way, we started measuring a dog’s success by how well they follow commands instead of how well they’re able to experience the world around them.

Training absolutely has its place, but a well-trained dog isn’t necessarily a fulfilled dog.

The goal shouldn’t be perfect compliance. It should be connection, understanding, and giving our dogs opportunities to express their natural behaviors.

What if the behavior you’re trying so hard to stop is the very thing you need to pay attention to?

When a dog is barking, pulling, growling, jumping, shutting down, or struggling around certain people or dogs, my first question isn’t, “How do I make this stop?”

It’s “Why is this dog doing this?”

Sometimes they’re scared. Sometimes they’re frustrated. Sometimes they’re overly excited. Sometimes a behavior has simply worked for them so many times that it has become their go-to response.

And sometimes we don’t know yet.

I think that last part is important.

Dog training doesn’t always mean immediately having an answer. Sometimes we need to slow down, watch the dog, look at what happens before and after the behavior, and get curious.

I don’t want a dog to behave simply because we’ve made the alternative uncomfortable enough.

I want to understand the dog in front of me and help them learn better ways to navigate their world.

That’s a big part of what Connected Dog Training means to me.

Connection over compliance.

I take a positive reinforcement approach to training, which means my focus is on rewarding and encouraging the behaviors we want to see, rather than punishing the ones we don’t. Positive reinforcement is grounded in modern animal behavior science and emphasizes clear communication, trust, and mutual respect between you and your dog.

This means I do not use any tools or methods that rely on fear, pain, or intimidation—no choke chains, prong collars, or shock devices. Instead, I use rewards that matter to your dog, whether that’s treats, toys, play, praise, or other forms of positive interaction. By pairing desired behaviors with something your dog values, we create a learning experience that is both enjoyable and effective.

My ultimate goal is to help you build a deeper connection with your dog—one rooted in understanding and cooperation. When your dog feels safe, understood, and motivated, they’re more likely to make good choices on their own, without the need for constant micromanagement. This doesn’t just lead to better behavior; it leads to a relationship where both you and your dog feel more in tune with each other.

Training with positive reinforcement isn’t just about teaching skills—it’s about changing perspectives. I want to help you and your dog see the world through each other’s eyes, creating a partnership that’s built to last a lifetime.
