Is everything in a dog’s world black and white? The idea that dogs can’t see color was widely accepted for decades, but new research and conclusions about canine anatomy and behavior have shown that while dogs can’t see the same colors humans do, dogs can still see some colors. This means the best toys for your dog may be those in blue and yellow hues.

The open-mouth sniffing face is caused by something called the “flehmen reaction,” and it’s perfectly normal. When your feline friend takes a sniff and leaves its mouth open for a few seconds, it’s actually drawing air into the mouth and up into Jacobson’s organ. This action helps the organ to process the scent more deeply than your cat’s nose can and sends signals to your cat’s brain. Usually, cats will have the flehmen reaction when sniffing urine or f***s from another cat, since these substances contain pheromones. Do your cats do this?

Your pet’s safety is always our priority ❤️
For after-hours emergencies this holiday season, New River Veterinary Emergency Services will be open during the dates and times listed below. 🐾

As we head into the holiday season, we wanted to share our December 2025 – January 2026 urgent care and emergency availability.

While our hours will remain the same, please know this decision was not made lightly. We would truly love to be available for our community on every holiday. However, appropriate staffing continues to be one of the biggest challenges in the veterinary field, and our top priority will always be providing the highest standard of care possible.

Our goal moving into the new year is to continue growing our team so we can safely extend our hours, especially during holidays when emergencies tend to occur more frequently. In just four months, NRVES has expanded tremendously, and we are incredibly grateful for the trust you’ve placed in us and for allowing us to care for your pets. Please know that every single patient truly means the world to us💚

If you need us on days we are closed, please don’t hesitate to leave us a voicemail or send us an email—we are still here for you in every way we can be.

Thank you for your understanding, support, and kindness.

✨ Happy Holidays from all of us at NRVES ✨

As we dive deeper into our series on toxic holiday ingredients for pets, let’s shine a light on macadamia nuts. These crunchy treats may be delightful for humans, but they can cause serious issues for dogs. Symptoms like weakness, tremors, and even hyperthermia can occur if a pet ingests these nuts. Keep your furry friends safe by steering clear of foods that contain macadamia nuts this holiday season! Always check ingredients before sharing festive goodies with your pets to ensure they remain happy and healthy during the celebrations. Your vigilance can make all the difference!

As we continue our series on toxic holiday ingredients for pets, let’s talk about raisins, grapes, and currants. These seemingly harmless treats can be extremely dangerous for your furry friends. Even small amounts can lead to serious health issues, including kidney failure. Remember to keep these fruits out of reach during your celebrations and opt for pet-safe snacks instead.

RAH spent some time getting crafty and made Winter Solstice jars ❄️✨

The winter solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year, a time to pause, reflect, and welcome the return of longer, brighter days ahead. Each jar represents light, warmth, and hope during the darkest part of the season, a little reminder that brighter days are always coming.
We loved taking a moment to slow down, reflect, and celebrate the season together 🤍

In our second installment of the series on toxic holiday ingredients for pets, we’re highlighting xylitol. This common sweetener, found in many sugar-free products, is incredibly harmful to dogs. Even small amounts can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar and lead to serious health issues. Keep an eye out for gum, candies, and baked goods that may contain this ingredient. Always check labels and keep your furry friends safe during the festive season!
