Four weeks ago, we welcomed a gentle cat named ZZ Providence Animal Control into our care. She was quiet, sweet, and reserved, and while nothing initially seemed urgent, it quickly became clear that she needed more help than anyone could see on the surface.
ZZ stopped eating. Her energy faded. Something was clearly wrong.
We moved quickly and started diagnostics. Her exam raised concerns immediately. She was visibly jaundiced. X-rays showed fluid in her abdomen and signs of pelvic pain. Bloodwork confirmed our fears. ZZ was anemic, fighting significant inflammation or infection, and her liver was being severely affected.
Because of how sick she was, ZZ was rushed to Ocean State Veterinary Specialists and hospitalized. After additional testing, we finally had an answer. ZZ has FIP
FIP, or Feline Infectious Peritonitis, is a serious disease caused by a mutation of the feline coronavirus. For years it was considered a death sentence. Today, there is treatment, but it is intensive, costly, and requires close monitoring.
ZZ is currently hospitalized and is expected to remain there for 2 to 3 days, possibly longer, for nutritional support, hydration, and stabilization while we begin treatment. We have already ordered her FIP medication so she can start as soon as possible.
The financial reality is heavy.
• Her current hospitalization estimate is up to just over $7,000 on the high end
• This does not include the diagnostics and workups already completed prior to admission
• The FIP medication alone is an additional $1,100 or more
Despite how sick she is, ZZ is still fighting. She deserves this chance.
