Words of wisdom from experience ….

I have been practicing medicine for over 25 years and seen many many pets with various ailments during that time . The one very constant in all lives human and furry is that there is an end . Like it or not there will be an end . In knowing that and seeing many pets at the end with their very distraught pet parents there is a common theme, a common question that I get “ how do we know when it’s time ?”

Well the simple answer is not so simple . The best I can tell folks is that there really is no “ right “ or “ correct “
time . UNLESS you waited to long and now your pets now in an emergency situation . I wish there were a specific sign a pet gave or a physical sign they could hold up to their owners to let them know but that does not happen .
Usually ( not always ) in most senior pets there a subtle signs that they give that owners should pay attention to . owners should also seek the advice of their local vet if they have any questions about their pets specific ailment . There are also many end of life , quality of life assessment tools available online to help score yours pets quality . As for Myself I try to help counsel each client on their pets ailment and the things that they need to watch for in terms of signs of decline . Ultimately the line that each family needs to meet to make the final decision is different . But I will tell you some words of wisdom that I have learned over the years …

1. if you try to “ time “ the end to squeak out every bit time you can you most likely will lose that bet against Mother Nature . In other words you will end up in emergency situation , waiting too long and therefore be unable to give your pet the peaceful transition he or she deserves. That which you are trying to avoid and fear most ( pain and suffering ) is exactly what unexpectedly will happen and any chance of a pain free and peaceful transition will be lost . The biggest mistake people make is waiting to long .IF we can step outside of our self , our self need and desire to have our pet with us until the very end …. We have the opportunity to provide our pet with one last LOVING gift … the gift of smooth and pain free transition hopefully and preferably in the comfort of their own home . To me that is the best gift the best “love gift “ that we can give back to them that tells them “ I love you so much for all you have given me all these years that I willing to sacrifice my desire for more time so that you do not experience any discomfort even if that means I have to say goodbye a little earlier “.
Saying goodbye on the earlier side I can ensure I give you the best all the way to the very end . “

2. The guilt of waiting too long , last longer than the grief

So the choice is yours …passionately for pets , Dr Pearson
