Imagine rushing your beloved dog to the emergency veterinarian in the middle of the night, desperate for answers, only to learn the one tool that could help isn't available. That was the moment Barkley's family faced.
Barkley became suddenly ill, and his family did everything they could to save him. But without access to an ultrasound, the veterinary team couldn't determine what was wrong or how to treat it. What should have been a moment of answers and action became something else entirely- a devastating goodbye filled with unanswered questions.
To this day, Barkley's family still wonders what might have been. No one should have to carry that uncertainty.
Barkley's family chose to honor his memory by helping prevent that uncertainty for other animals, specifically those relying on rescue care. Through a generous gift to Ruff Start Rescue, they are helping to bring an ultrasound machine into our expanded rescue veterinary space.
While this expansion is not a public emergency clinic, it is a critical investment in lifesaving care. The animals who come to Ruff Start are often sick, injured, or medically fragile and they have nowhere else to turn.
With an ultrasound on site, our veterinary team can act quickly and decisively. They can diagnose the unknown, begin treatment sooner, and give more animals a real chance to heal.
A chance that Barkley didn't have.
And a chance that, because of supporters like you, we can give to so many more.
Because every rescued animal deserves access to answers. And every life deserves the best chance forward. Your support helps make that possible.
Now, we are preparing for what comes next. To meet the growing needs in our community, we are expanding our Princeton facility with nearly 3,000 square feet of space designed for healing, faster medical care, and less stress for the animals who need us most.
This expansion will allow our veterinary team to diagnose injuries and illnesses on-site, including more than 70 x-rays each year, and over 350 in the next five years, while redirecting thousands of dollars back into lifesaving care.
New, thoughtfully designed spaces will support hundreds of cats annually and provide a calm environment for dogs recovering from intensive treatments. Three dedicated cat rooms, each able to care for more than 80 cats each year, will offer natural light, improved ventilation, and safe outdoor access to catios. A quiet comfort room will give dogs undergoing heartworm treatment the peaceful space they need to heal, and will also serve as a photography space to help animals connect with adopters and find homes faster.
Every improvement is designed with one goal in mind: giving more animals the care they need and the second chances they deserve. Every gift helps bring this vision to life, ensuring that when an animal arrives in need, we're ready to help.
