Update 8/7 THANK YOU PRAYER WARRIORS!
Scarlett DOES NOT HAVE CANCER!
She does have a rare form of hemolytic anemia called PIMA. It’s going to be a lifelong road, but it CAN be treated with steroids, immunosuppressants, blood transfusions, and if necessary a splenectomy (in a few years ). Most dogs do well, some never get back in a groove. Scarlett is an alpha corgi—-she’ll pull off this recovery and flourish on the meds! Thank you all for the prayers!
Update: 8/6 pm
Scarlett’s bone marrow collection went well. Her red blood count has gone down enough that she requires another unit of blood tonight. The doctors will start her on steroids tomorrow and possibly the autoimmune suppressant medication. Now it’s a waiting game. The very soonest she will get to come home is Friday evening but more than likely it will be the weekend. Please keep her in your prayers. We will have daycare tomorrow because Scarlett will be very busy getting better. Friday we will not have daycare because I miss my girl and need to see her!
Thank you for all the prayers!
Okay, my prayer warriors! Scarlett (below) is at Auburn University Small Animal Hospital. Her bone marrow is not producing enough red blood cells (only 1,000 compared to the normal 60,000). She has received packed red blood cells and will have a bone marrow draw tomorrow. Please pray for no cancer and an anemia that can be treated! Results take 5-7 days on marrow testing. If results come quickly, it is most likely cancer, so pray for results to NOT COME QUICKLY! I know that’s strange, but her doctor says no news is good news the first few days. Hopefully, she can come home Thursday on a steroid and immune suppressant while we await results. Another blood transfusion is likely. Scarlett is only 4 years old and her bio sister Iris needs her to come home( and so do I).
