We’re so sorry to learn of the loss of a great dog, Moose. Moose was adopted from our shelter several years ago. He charmed the internet with his floof. He graced the streets of Portsmouth at the Portsmouth Olde Towne Farmers Market. At one point, Moose even saved a family from a (boat) house fire that happened overnight. He shared his life with a loving family and many dog friends. We were so honored to have known him, and we’re so sorry for his family’s loss. Rest easy, sweet boy. We’re thankful that we were able to watch you enjoy your life with your family.

Recently we had a really cool mom reach out to us and tell us about her daughter who just so happened to have a birthday coming up.

Mom let us know that while they weren’t able to have a dog at this time, her daughter really loves dogs and just wanted to snuggle one for her 8th birthday. (Is that not the cutes thing ever?) While we don’t have an official “snuggle” program we do have a frield trip program! This family came in on daughter’s birthday, and we matched them up with Majia. From all accounts, it was a magical day. Frozen custards, walks along the river and some good old fashioned snuggles.

Whether you have a birthday coming up or not, we have dogs that would be so stoked to go out with you, yes YOU, for a day.

It’s National Dog Day, and we’d like to introduce you to Julius:

Hi I’m Julius! I am laid back giy with dreams of retirement from shelter life. I live for snack breaks and memories of Saturday Morning cartoons. My favorite? Inspector Gadget! I love how Brain, the dog, is the real hero, as it should be, and the cat is obviously the villain . As for the human I am looking for, and that is looking for me, you don’t need a helicopter hat or go-go-gadget arms but if you had a treat dispensing gadget, I wouldn't be MAD. (See what I did there!)

You see those cute ears? They’re just for show. The Animal Care Staff will walk us through how to acclimate to owning a special dog like me.
