Winter may still feel far away, but frost can sneak up fast depending on your zone. Get these done while the days are still mild:
1. Harvest Tender Veggies
• Zones 3–6 → Pick before mid-October
• Zones 7–9 → You have until late fall, but keep an eye on night temps.
2. Dig Up Bulbs (Dahlias, Cannas, Gladiolus)
• Zones 3–7 → Lift and store indoors.
• Zones 8–9 → Usually safe to leave in the ground with mulch.
3. Protect Perennials
• Zones 3–5 → Mulch 3–4 inches after first freeze.
• Zones 6–9 → 1–2 inches is plenty.
4. Bring Pots Inside
• Zones 3–7 → Move herbs, succulents, and tender plants indoors now.
• Zones 8–9 → Just shelter from heavy rain or cool winds.
5. Clean & Store Tools
• All Zones → Wash, dry, oil blades. Prevents rust over winter.
6. Drain Hoses & Water Lines
• Zones 3–6 → Essential before first hard freeze.
• Zones 7–9 → Still smart, but less urgent.
7. Plant Garlic & Spring Bulbs
• Zones 3–5 → Get them in by early October.
• Zones 6–9 → You can plant into late fall.
✨ Tailor the timing to your zone → smooth spring start guaranteed.
