Aging cats are prone to a number of diseases, but the three most common are chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetes mellitus and hyperthyroidism. These conditions can be difficult to distinguish clinically because all three tend to cause weight loss, increased thirst/urination and a generally unkempt appearance. Blood tests and urinalysis are often required to determine the cause of a cat’s illness and formulate an effective treatment plan. That is why it is so vital to keep them up to date on their semi-annual wellness exams to watch for these diseases. Senior kitty bloodwork can change quickly and quickly watching trends is very important which is why we recommend doing bloodwork every 6 months.
