We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve been selected as a 2025 Community Impact Grant recipient! This support helps us continue our mission to advance food sovereignty, environmental justice, and neighborhood resiliency in the Garfield community. This grant will help us continue to grow the food our community wants, make fresh produce more accessible to neighbors through our mobile produce market, and support the Garfield Growing Network - folks who grow in our community allotment garden, home raised beds installed by GCF, and gardening education workshop attendees.

Thank you DLC for believing in grassroots organizations like ours. Together, we’re building a brighter future for all.

Keep GCF in mind this winter, for quiet contemplative walks in the snow! Here are some good shots from the big snow last week. This is one of my (Bre’s) favorite times of year to sit quietly on the farm, when the todo lists are swept under a thick carpet of snow for a few days! It’s a great time to watch bright red cardinals foraging for seeds and cleaning themselves in brisk puddles. And it’s a great space to be reminded of the importance of rest and dormancy for restoration and blossoming.

This far we’ve been continuing to plant native very producing shrubs along the edges of the farm. Some of the edges have been long neglected with many invasive plants. We have removed multiflora Rose, Japanese honeysuckle, and of course, Japanese not w**d. But, here in Pennsylvania, just putting things in the ground means very little. We’ve tried many different Ways of protecting new plants from deer. Currently we’re using these restoration tree tubes. Thanks Lyle for your help planting a couple of weeks ago and all the other volunteers earlier this fall.

Winter Solstice Celebration
Sunday, December 21 from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM

We are thrilled that is once again partnering with Garfield Community Farm to lead a warm, annual Winter Solstice celebration that welcomes the season’s quiet beauty and the rebirth of light.

This free event begins with a guided meditation, inviting reflection on winter’s stillness and the solstice’s timeless symbolism of hope and renewal. A candlelit walk through the farm grounds follows, leading us from darkness to light, a journey mirroring the sun’s own turning point.

At the heart of the evening, a communal bonfire invites warmth, stories, and shared s’mores—a reminder of simple joys and togetherness during winter’s longest night.

Come celebrate the season, nature, and community in this timeless tradition.

This Giving Tuesday, we’re highlighting and donating to two organizations that align with our mission - Farmer Girl Eb and her nonprofit Out of the End and Black Dream Escape . We believe supporting each other and sharing resources are two keys to building community resilience.

Farmer Girl Eb founded Out of the End, a West End based nonprofit that provides thriving skills to youth ages of 5-17. Their work focuses on helping Black and Brown communities thrive by teaching youth and adults to grow their own food, offering year-round educational programs, and operating two urban farms and a corner store that provide fresh, affordable produce. Farmer Girl Eb also is a children’s book author with a new book out - Hey, Pepper, Heyyyy. We’re excited to add this book to our little free library!

Black Dream Escape (BDE) is a radical therapeutic practice that centers Black and Indigenous rest as a primary component of holistic mental health. Using original music and original meditation scripts, they provide intentional individual and communal rest opportunities. They are our Garfield neighbors and are looking for land to grow medicinal herbs, offer overnight respite care, and invite folks to explore how the land can rejuvenate and restore us.

Giving is more than generosity, it’s solidarity. Together, we are providing connections to nature, education, increasing access to food, and building community resilience!

Look who is featured in next season’s High Mowing Catalogue!! Bobbi Wilson 🤗 Bobbi is one of the Environmental Justice heroes that we learn about during our Environmental Justice curriculum that we go through with youth. The lights are in! Though nothing quite compares to walking the Peace Labyrinth in the summer with its abundance of blooms and pollinators, walking the Peace Labyrinth by light on a chilly night comes close.

These lights will be up until March (pending malfunctioning 🤞🏼😂). Make sure to stop by and enjoy them at some point this winter!

🧄🧄🧄We’ve finally got our garlic in the ground!
We’re trying some varieties from including some soft neck because we want to try braiding garlic in 2026! We try to save a few more seeds every year, so over half of our seed garlic this year was grown and saved here on the farm, from garlic we grew and saved also the year prior! We also saved and planted GCF grown potatoes this year, as we had good luck with overwintering potatoes in deep hills last season. Have you folks planted your garlic yet?!

GCF is proud and excited to partner with Valley View Presbyterian Church on a new initiative: Garfield Eats. This program provides free, nutritious meals to our community and will be a mixture of take-out and sit down meals.

Tomorrow evening will be the first of these meals and will consist of soup, salad, and bread. This will be a take-out meal and we’ll have all the containers needed to get you set up to bring a meal home for yourself and any others in your household.

Stop by Valley View Presbyterian Church, 601 N. Aiken Ave, between 5pm and 7pm tomorrow evening to grab your warm meal.
