Wait, what!?! I don't have to climb every mountain and conquer every behavior challenge?

No, safety is always 100% top priority, but as long as everyone can remain safe, you don't actually have to fix every behavior problem your pup might have. You can absolutely pick and choose the ones important to you and then manage the rest.

A human may decide that addressing their dog's on leash reactivity needs to be the focus of their training work because they need to walk their dog in their busy neighborhood BUT their dog's struggles interacting with children isn't something that impacts their daily life, so it's not critical. It's okay to let go of the kiddo issue for now and focus on what matters most.

Maybe you teach management skills instead of fixing the very sporadic issue. Your dog really struggles with guests in the home and can get gnarly....but you only have guests over once a year and aren't interested in inviting people over often to practice ...No problem. Let's instead teach your pup to be comfortable confined away from the guest. You can hang out with your guest and your pup isn't upset, everyone wins.

It's okay to pick and choose your battles. Manage some things, live with less than perfect behaviors with some things, fix the behaviors that are important to you... do what works for you, but you don't have to do it all. .

Oh, rally courses class, I should def take some photos for social media to show off how awesome these teams are doing .... Here are the photos I take... Lol lol!

They are just too stinking cute!! Poor Freya is a little too short to easily reach the top of the wall to stay supported for long enough lol

They all had a blast last night and did a great job on the course... They also all LOVE the lamb Rawbble food by BIXBI Pet as treats!

Great teams!

Alright! We are a good bit late on this, but it's been a complicated schedule this time around. Because of how the schedules have played out this year, this session has a HUGE spread in start dates. So we are going to do two slightly smaller separate newsletters and registrations on for July/Aug classes and one for Sept.

You can expect a newsletter between this weekend and early next week. Follow us on FB and IG to get a heads up of the date and time the newsletter will go out!

We know what we have scheduled for September start dates and want folks to know what's coming up for our more specialty classes (expect our regular classes as normal). You can sign up for a July class and still be wrapped up before September classes because of how wild this schedule is right now.

What class are you most excited about?!?

Flyball classes at SJC! Flyball is a fun and fast paced sport that's a relay race with a team of 4 dogs! While some teams can do the full sequence in under 15 seconds, it's a sport with a ton of divisions so all dogs can play, even if they aren't whippet fast.

We are figuring out our July-Sept schedule... Are you interested in intro to flyball (or another level)?

Flyball is a sport that takes time and reps to master, so most folks can expect to take each class more than once to master the skills. Meep and Strax have been fairly regularly training flyball and going to practice and while they debuted last year (first official races), they are just now getting ready to be able to race regularly. But once they get the sequence and skills, it's also a sport you can do periodic practices for upkeep but it doesn't need the same frequency of practice all the time to maintain.

So who is in? Come play flyball with us!

Some friends who have visited us recently for private sessions. It never ceases to amaze me the variety found in this species. Fluffy dog, smooth-coated dog. Uppy ears, floppy ears, and whatever Wren the Greyhound is doing with her ears. 25 lb, 90 lb. Smooshed face, super long muzzle. Dilute tricolored, black tri-colored. Two different red brindles. Long and lean body, short and stubby body.

It's wild to think of how much variety we've created in dogs!

Puppy training and socialization class! Puppies will learn how to offer desirable behaviors like sit, down, attention, foundation leash walking, impulse control, polite greeting games, and more to a puppy appropriate level. We also emphasize good foundation socialization so they will have plenty of opportunities to see that people are awesome (even if they are wearing weird things), they’ll build confidence on unstable surfaces, learn to be brave climbing equipment, learn that noises can be fun in the ball pit, that vet visits and groomer visits aren’t scary, and they’ll have a couple puppy play opportunities.

PRE-REQUISITES: Must be 18 weeks or younger by week 1 (tiny breeds who will be less than 10lbs as adults can be 20wks), be current on their vaccination protocol (and finish it during class if applicable), & have a clean f***l test or proof of recent worming before class.

Wait, what!?

Oh bless your heart! Dogs will be dogs unless we teach them how to be house dogs in our human society. There's no long explanation on this one.

It is 100% on the human's shoulders to teach the dogs our human world expectations because the vast majority of 'problem behaviors' are actually completely natural dog behaviors.

The things they "just know" are digging, chewing, biting, scavanging, jumping up at faces, scent marking, rolling in stinky things to obscure their scent, barking at things, killing critters, chasing things, herding things, etc.

The things we have to teach them are to potty or mark outside only, we lay on couches not dig on cushions, we scavange for treats from a kibble ball not from the counter, we chase grab and disembowel TOYS not critters, we sit when people say hi, we wait patiently as humans eat their food and not steal it, etc.

If you haven't specifically taught your dog what they should do in a particular situation, it's likely they will default to the 'dog answer' and that's 100% not their fault, they are just doing what they've been bred to do for centuries.

We have a couple spots left starting this week!
So you've mastered intro to scent, let's get into the extra fun part of the scentwork game! This class builds on birch and containers to all the other elements found in scentwork!

We'll teach interior searches, exterior searchers, buried, submerged, and vehicles. We'll introduce the 3 other common odors anis, clove, cypress. We'll continue to work on odor obedience, introduce some indication games, continue to build searching skills, learn to search for more than one hide, and more. Human handlers will continue to work on good leash handling, general handling skills, reading their dog as they navigate odor, and more.

Students can expect to take this class multiple times before they've mastered all the skills we cover. This is a FABULOUS class for folks who have some struggles happening in trials--go back to basics and building those up often resolves common struggles.

Pre-requisites--Dogs must have successfully passed intro to scent at SJC (or be a team competing who need to come back to basics to resolve some struggles). Dogs will be working outside and need to be able to work outside at our shopping center without being too fearful or reactive to things in the world. Dogs need to be able to pass by other dogs on the way to search areas while holding their marbles together.
