For puppies who might go on to do sports like agility, obedience, scentwork, flyball, rally-o, dock diving, or become active working dogs! We focus on skills that will set your puppy up well for a life of sports or work once their bodies are mature enough to jump into their sports. General skills like confidence with obstacles, toy play skills, focus and attention, body awareness, marker system foundations. Plus sport specific foundations like clean position changes, precision obedience/rally foundations, puppy-safe agility foundations, scentwork introduction, some skills for flyball, and more! Many of the foundation skills are multi-sport skills... so one skill can apply to many sports/activities. Plus some work on off-leash training.

This class teaches the skills that Tena teaches to all her puppies as foundation skills for their future in a ton of sports--basically, it's the class she WISHES she could take!

This class does NOT include puppy play, puppies learn to work off leash around others.

Prerequisites--Puppies must be less than 9 months at the start of class and MUST be comfortable around dogs/people (non reactive)

Class starts:

Sat Aug 22 --3:15pm (a couple of planned off-weeks)! This class covers enough novice level (and some intermediate level tricks) to earn your Novice Trick Dog title with Do More With Your Dog program or AKC!

You'll learn tricks like spin (both directions), peekaboo, jump through a hoop, leg weaves, figure 8 around legs, paws up, take a bow, jump for joy, and others! Each class is a little different with which tricks we cover, but so many fun ones!

Prerequisites--students should have completed at least elementary manners (or Puppy K) or another sports class at SJC. This class IS reactive dog friendly, as long as they've been successful in our group classes with barriers, they can come play!

*We have an entire house full of pups with GI issues right now so it's a little... ruff. We aren't sure if it's a bad batch of food, a bug, or what but it's pretty much a yucky hospital ward over here. Send me good thoughts because this is TOUGH!

Wait, what? You don't NEEED to do neighborhood walks?

Yeah. Here's a dirty little secret. I (Tena) don't do neighborhood walks. I can't remember the last time I took a dog on a stroll in the neighborhood. Yet I don't think anyone would ever say my dog's quality of life isn't fabulous. I absolutely have the benefit of a fenced yard now, but even when living in a more apartment building dense area in NY, my doggo (very spicy) didn't get neighborhood walks daily. We took walks in green spaces and more business areas with fewer surprise dogs.

There are a ton of ways to exercise your dog both mentally and physically that don't involve lengthy neighborhood walks. You don't have to suffer through awful walks in the neighborhood just because it's what you 'should do' when you have a dog.

Hop in the car and drive to a different location, do parkour adventures in the unfenced back yard area, walk a shopping center parking lot, do scentwork, do brain games, or some good fitness exercises inside your living room.

Dogs absolutely need to get out and explore their environment, but it doesn't need to be your neighborhood if that's not working for you.

Level 2 basic manners class! Build on all the skills and games learned in elementary class. We’ll introduce a formal and really reliable sit/down stay, impulse control for polite greetings, a reliable leave it cue. We’ll also be increasing distance, duration, and distractions for leash walking, settle on mat, come when called. We also focus on more ability to perform these skills with other dog friends around.

Humans learn how to thoughtfully set criteria to build more distance, duration, and distractions to the skills their pup already knows. They’ll learn how to reduce the rate of reinforcement successfully and ask for more work between reinforcers. This class also introduces how we can create fun games to play with our dogs to make training and practice more exciting and fun!

PRE-REQ-- Successfully completed Elementary school without a barrier. Not appropriate for reactive dogs.

Is your pup over 18wks-ish old? This is where you’ll start for our basic manners series and where we introduce all the foundation skills and games your pup needs for the higher levels of class.

Dogs will be introduced to foundation level basic manners like focus, sit, down, impulse control games, polite greeting games, settling on a mat and being patient, loose leash walking, beginning of come when called, beginning of sit until released, and more.

Humans will learn how to effectively use clicker/marker training to build solid communication and build a positive relationship. They’ll learn how to prevent unwanted problem behaviors while working on training better manners and how to make good training choices for their dog.

Prerequisites: This can be used as a first class or a refresher. We can use visual barriers to give a more nervous or spicy pup a privacy area to feel comfortable working, but dogs need to be okay with other people and dogs in the environment.

One class, two focuses. Polite greetings and Patience!

We will cover a variety of games, skills, and management tools for teaching polite greetings with people. We will also do a ton of wait/stay/stationing/impulse control type skills to work on teaching patience required skills (reliable stay, impulse control around food, leave it, stationing during meals, and door manners).

This class is NOT appropriate for dogs who are reactive to people or dogs who are not comfortable interacting with strangers.

PREREQUISITES--Dogs should have completed at least Elementary Manners or Awesome Adolescents

Puppy training and socialization class! Puppies will learn how to offer desirable behaviors like sit, down, attention, foundation leash walking, impulse control, polite greeting games, and more to a puppy appropriate level. We also emphasize good foundation socialization so they will have plenty of opportunities to see that people are awesome (even if they are wearing weird things), they’ll build confidence on unstable surfaces, learn to be brave climbing equipment, learn that noises can be fun in the ball pit, that vet visits and groomer visits aren’t scary, and they’ll have a couple puppy play opportunities.

PRE-REQUISITES: Must be 18 weeks or younger by week 1 (tiny breeds who will be less than 10lbs as adults can be 20wks), be current on their vaccination protocol (and finish it during class if applicable), & have a clean f***l test or proof of recent worming before class.

This class is designed for the teenagers of the group--roughly 5 - 24month old pups who are struggling with common teenager issues--over excitement, jumping, pulling wildly, totally inattentive to owners, etc. It is a more narrowly focused class so we can go more in depth with each skill.

This class is different every session because the skills taught are selected by the students. Each person picks their top 5 and we pick the most popular 5 skills, ensuring everyone gets at least 2 of their wants.

Focus/attention : Settle/Relax around dogs : Come when called
Drop it : Leave it / impulse control : Loose leash walking
Greeting people nicely : Settle when asked : Stay

PREREQUISITES--this class is NOT appropriate for reactive dogs who can't work quietly in class. Dogs who are distracted by dogs are fine, dogs who persistently bark/lunge/pull/whine at others are not appropriate for this class. Dogs should be age appropriate roughly 5-24 months old (but it's not a firm age window).

Send this to your collar maker neighbor, invite your potter friend who makes cute mugs with pets on them, tag the artist who has some pet themes in some of their art, the woodworker that has some pet themes in their work, the clothing business that has some pet themes along side their normal wears, etc!
