Happy Tails Haven Horse Rescue and Sanctuary

Happy Tails Haven Horse Rescue and Sanctuary We rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home equines from a variety of situations. About Us: CoDreLea Farm started out as a horse breeding facility in 1996.

After a few years of this, we came to realize that there were “too many horses”and many were unwanted and in need of homes or in danger of being killed. Later we came to realize the same was true for unwanted dogs and cats. So about 15 years ago, we started privately rescuing dogs, cats and the occasional horse. Many of the horses that remain here are part of the original breeding stock or a fe

w or their offspring. We began to advocate against indiscriminate breeding of horses, and for the spaying and neutering of pets. We have also been advocates for experiential learning with horses and other animals. Klara has been a certified member of EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning) organization in the past. EAGALA is a methology for doing Equine Assisted Psychotherapy. CoDreLea Farm has contracted with mental health professionals to provide this service in the past. Animals, horses in particular, are great teachers utilizing metaphorical learning. In other words, our animals are very good at reflecting back to us what we need to learn. In April 2014, we incorporated Happy Tails Haven as a nonprofit corporation in South Dakota. In December 2014, we attained 501c3 nonprofit status. We now strive to make the lives of animals (horses in particular) better and to foster the animal-human bond.

Hey ya'll! Did you know that June is Colic awareness month? This month lets talk about colic. Colic is the number 1 cause of death in adult horses!
There are 3 "main" types of colic:
Gas colic: This is a buildup of gas in the intestines that causes bloating and distention.
Impaction: this is a blockage and can be from undigested food, sand, or even foreign material that gets stuck in their gut.
Torsion (displacement): This sometimes happens from one of the other types of colic, or can happen on its own. It is when the intestine twists or shifts and cuts of blood supply. When this happens, it is an emergency and requires immediate surgery.
Next week we will look at some of the symptoms of colic.
Thanks for being part of our herd!

Merlin turned in his two week notice and has decided to retire and become a house cat. He told us he wants to formally introduce you all to his replacement. So everyone, please welcome Nightly to the Happy Tails Haven crew! Nightly showed up one day and decided Happy Tails Haven would be a good place to call home. Klara asked around to the neighbors if he belonged to anyone, and everyone said they haven't seen him before. After taking him to the vet to be fixed and check if there was a microchip (there was none), Happy Tails Haven became his forever home! And he didn't take to long to make himself comfortable. Welcome home, Nightly! ❤️🐈‍⬛

Welcome to the herd! Everyone meet Barbie and Ginger. These 2 ladies came to us yesterday as owner surrenders. We are going through the vetting process with these girls and letting them get more used to us and then as they are ready, they will be available for adoption as pasture pals. THANK YOU for helping us give these girls safe haven.
